Switching from software developer to PM
Just wanted to know people's experiences who have made this switch or even just general things i or anyone should know. Apart from the obvious change in work, Is the salary structure the same? Etc.
And just for context in my specific case I'm almost closing in on 4 years of experience in software development.
I did the same but for the work and not the money. Money initially will be low since you are starting in a new role which requires other skills but will increase later as you move up into leadership ladder
What for you was "for the work" did you know you prefer it instead of development, are you just in general better at it? Or something else?
Work as in when you are develop you just do what you are told to build without having a bigger picture in mind. In a product role, you decide what to build based on what users want. Your works impacts the organisation and I wanted to be in a position rather being in a development role and become a people manager in later half of my career
I made the switch and I don’t regret it. It’s amazing and a very challenging role.
If you don't mind,i would like to know how you did it and how it went through and also anything that would help me. There's no dm here so if you don't mind discord or anything such?
Ya same for me, i also want to know How u switch, is it via classic MBA route
Do it
Well as someone who transitioned from engineering to PM. I would say first take your time to understand the role and why you want to do it. People on online platforms says a lot of rosy stuffs as well as unnecessary critical stuffs. As per my understanding, in context of Indian ecosystems most pm works is just glorified project management, there is very minimal to no deep product thinking happening. If you still feel you want to transition I will say try internally first.
