I am a final-year CS student and will be graduating this June. I have been doing internships since 6th semester. In my first and second year I used to code like 9 to 10 hours a day and learn new skills and thanks to that I was able to grep an internship in start of 6th sem and since then I am doing internships and its been 1.5 years and I have done 2 internships, one as an backend developer for 6 months and another as an ML Engineer for 10 months and I am still interning over here and I have learned a lot and have worked on many amazing projects, now the problem is my current company told that they will give me full time offer if they receive the funding in April or may and HR told me to consider this as no and now the CEO of my previous internship called me and asked me if I am willing to join there for full time and I told him I am waiting for the offer from here and he told me that he will try to match the offer but I don't want to join the older company as there the culture is toxic and I also don't have other offer to negotiate as I did not sit for on campus placement as I am getting paid more as an intern(50k per month) then the full time offers the companies are giving on campus. Now in 2 months, I will be graduating and still, I don't have full-time offer now I feel like all the sacrifices I made in my first and second years went in vain, all the hard work, consistency, missing parties and trips all these things now makes me depressed, where did I go wrong and what should I do now?

What is the best piece of financial advice you've ever received?

How do I deal with a teammate who treats every feedback as criticism and the goes on to defend his actions to the point that it’s impossible to have a civil discussion. 
Any pointers will help as I have tried almost everything I can think of. Talked to manager and manager doesn’t want to say anything coz he is one of the best in our team🤷

1. Work hard in your job. Don't complain and waste time. We know everyone is replaceable, but work so damn hard that if at all you decide to resign and switch sometime, it should come as a shell shocker to them.  
 Build a program/product/team from scratch, own it end to end so much that they'll never find anyone close to you who can work with the same efficiency. 
 You'll obviously take your learnings and apply them later on in your next job, but 
 You'll also earn the respect of all your colleagues which might be needed in your future corporate journey. 
 2. Don't chase money early on in your career unless you actually**need** it. Focus on building relationships, knowledge, learning to code (it helps) and earning respect of your colleagues wherever you go. 
 3. Don't get into smoking due to peer pressure. AVOID IT.

I have three younger cousins. They don't want to code. They have their clarity. They don't want to pursue any particular engineering stream as well. 

They want to get a decent paying job. Let's say 6-8 lpa start with a path to 15-20 lpa in 4-5 years. 

I tried advising them to not invest a lot of money and four years of time in engineering. Their family is average middle class financially. I told them that I'll advise you what all to learn like content writing, seo, data analytics etc. So do a simple course, save money and rather invest in something that matters for job. 

They did listen but did not get confidence to act. 
All three went for engineering stream. These are private colleges with tier 3ish names. Now they don't get time to put a lot of time because 8-4 is usually college time. Unlike tier 1,2 college where you get campus and a lot of freedom, the colleges usually have a lot of classes and compulsory 80% type attendance. 

Did you face similar situation? What did you advise? Do you think I was giving them right decision?

Did you try advising your cousins not to pursue engineering if they don't want to code?

Your advice is misleading. You don't become a best in class data analyst if you can't code. SEO is a shady business and there isn't growth. Even a PU graduate can do content writing or SEO. Engineering is like a passport. You use the degree to make your career. The number of people earning 20L with 5 yoe with a non engg degree is pretty low. I empathize with the 8-4 struggle. I have seen such people, but they are still better off by doing engineering than anything else. There are other core engineering career options in non-software industry, but you will have to be competitive to secure a decent job even there. There are banking, insurance etc. Even these require people to be competitive. There is no free lunch. May be in European nations, but these won't last long.

Just wondering if there are any interesting stories around this? Like I know one senior who is pretty important for a project so he takes his manager very lightly. Once the manager escorted him to a meeting room and kind of gave serious warnings. Worked only for a while I guess.

Early in my career during my internship, I was in the elevator with a middle aged man with silver hair. He introduced himself and then started asking me about my experience here and my background. I duly responded to him. He gave me a very simple advice,

"There will be a lot of people seeking your help here. Do help them but always ensure you get credit. What is not seen is forgotten and did not happen."

I came to know that he was an extremely senior partner later during the day when I asked someone about him.
This advice stuck with me throughout my career.

What is the most important advice needed to survive in Big 4s?

Everything makes sense in retrospect. Sometimes we wish we took the advice that was given to us but fail to comprehend it. I'll start - money doesn't equal happiness;sadly. It'll get you to 70% faux happiness. But it's the 30% remaining percent that counts.

What’s a common piece of advice people give that you believe is completely wrong?

Becoming too much friendly and little close with colleagues is good or bad thing? 

In my company/team most the people are from same age and mostly male. I found there is too much unnecessary discussions and arguments and worse thing is you have to respect each other. 

Just curious because today my junior almost disrespected me and I was very confused how to react.

Here’s why career advice is generally bad.

1. Those who share career advice online are generally out there trying to shill you paid courses. They tell you what you want to hear so you pay up.

2. Any career advice that works will lose its edge over time. Because it becomes widely adopted, and that’s precisely because it works. 

Example:
If everyone is building a portfolio website then it becomes the defacto standard. I’m not saying that don’t build a portfolio website. 

What I’m saying is, that it becomes less effective over time because you building one is not a clear differentiator.

Imagine sending a letter by post to an early stage company’s founder where you want to work, he might be more willing to schedule a call with you because you chose an approach that they might not have experienced first hand ever. 

Also, I’m not saying that the above said approach will work, since it’s unproven you’ll have to experiment and evaluate if it works.

Maybe a good heuristic is to “do what it takes to stand out” and that means being creative with how you navigate work life. 

3. Those giving advice generally impose their thought model onto you. They make assumptions basis what they think is right.

This is not a bad thing but it does not account for your specific constraints.

Finally, if you do want to ask for advice.
1. Ask “How” questions to those not much older than you, since they are executing in the trenches.
2. Ask “Why” questions to much older folks, you try to get closer to their first principles, which is the base level truth that cannot be divided further. 

Avoid asking “What” questions to anyone, generally it’s good to think them through yourself.
