What is the best piece of financial advice you've ever received?

Why do relatives feel that they should always talk about doing things the right way and how do they know what they say is the right way?

Some examples -
- to lose weight, focus on walking and fully come to normal BMI and then only do weight training. But, research suggests weight training to be more beneficial for both weight loss and increasing metabolism
- we should drink hot water to lose weight. What?😂
- get married early and marriage is the only way to go!
- our screen time shouldn't be more with mobile, but rather with tv
- don't use earphones, they damage ears
- Some fruits are beneficial for diabetes

Don't get me wrong, I love relatives. I just don't enjoy someone giving advice when I didn't ask them. Especially when I can't trust their source of information for anything - life advices, religion, shastra,  traditions, women's rights etc.

And, I am really tired fighting battle and tackling so much misinformation about everything. All I do is just listen to them and move on!

Mine would be that despite the hunger to prove yourself always take the time off to enjoy your success both personally and with people close to you.

What are some common misconceptions about working in consulting?

I might get some flack for calling this out on this platform but I see a lot of young professionals monetizing their credentials through TopMate and other sites, for advice.

This might be considered a new age thing, but it's a zero sum approach. I understand that it's an essential part of one's brand building exercise but a sign of a good brand is also being altruistic. Some people might say that you put a price to the time that you may give and also filter from the mass of requests that come through. These maybe valid points but being able to judge every request on merit and being able to provide value is where you are paying it forward. Pun intended 

A good advice that impacts somebody's life/career without a transactional value will probably give you far more satisfaction than some random Rs. 1500 that is credited to your account.

Here’s why career advice is generally bad.

1. Those who share career advice online are generally out there trying to shill you paid courses. They tell you what you want to hear so you pay up.

2. Any career advice that works will lose its edge over time. Because it becomes widely adopted, and that’s precisely because it works. 

Example:
If everyone is building a portfolio website then it becomes the defacto standard. I’m not saying that don’t build a portfolio website. 

What I’m saying is, that it becomes less effective over time because you building one is not a clear differentiator.

Imagine sending a letter by post to an early stage company’s founder where you want to work, he might be more willing to schedule a call with you because you chose an approach that they might not have experienced first hand ever. 

Also, I’m not saying that the above said approach will work, since it’s unproven you’ll have to experiment and evaluate if it works.

Maybe a good heuristic is to “do what it takes to stand out” and that means being creative with how you navigate work life. 

3. Those giving advice generally impose their thought model onto you. They make assumptions basis what they think is right.

This is not a bad thing but it does not account for your specific constraints.

Finally, if you do want to ask for advice.
1. Ask “How” questions to those not much older than you, since they are executing in the trenches.
2. Ask “Why” questions to much older folks, you try to get closer to their first principles, which is the base level truth that cannot be divided further. 

Avoid asking “What” questions to anyone, generally it’s good to think them through yourself.
