Advice on next career move

Profile:

  • Engineering degree from a Tier 1 college
  • ~3 years of experience in product and analytics in adtech firm
  • Currently serving as a lead product analyst, earning around 15 LPA.

Worked tirelessly to switch roles to a Product Manager position, but was denied by management and received an underwhelming appraisal. As a result, I feel that I'm not earning my true potential and feel devalued by my firm.

I am considering a switch, I would appreciate guidance on whether it's a suitable time to make a change, or if I should wait until the job market recovers.

I would suggest wait and ride the rough wave with your current role, unless you find something that is extremely relevant given your experience. Start interviewing though , get warmed up and build some product muscle. Easiest way to do the PM switch is internally, however you might have to make a stronger case. There are a lot of PM openings but competition is extremely fierce.

The internal switch might take 2-3 years that too for an APM role. I feel the timeline is too long and hence looking for external opportunities. Also, I feel stagnant in the role hence feel intense urge to toil in a new environment. With optimum preparation, I might be able to crack roles atleast be interview ready.

Yes, after 3 yr in product analyst role already, waiting 3 more years for apm role is not worth it. Continue giving interviews, but accept that it will take time. If you'll get impatient, you might accept a bad opportunity. And in this market scenario it won't be a good position to be in.
