The best way to break into Product is to have proof of work

  • an internship or a short below-market-pay at an early stage startup
  • using your current skillset for one role (design/dev/marketing/analytics) then switching to product internally by doing the work
  • if nothing else: create a portfolio of 2-3 medium articles (product teardown, sector summary, redesigns, features for any popular app)

Check Reforge artefacts. Read the book Inspired. Read Lenny Rachitsky’s blog. Check out free courses online. There is sooooo much free content.

PM in a startup though demands proof of work. Without it the hiring manager risks you wasting their time and the teams effort so figure this piece out.

PM bootcamps honestly do not teach anything meaningful. The candidates who do get offers after this is again because of some proof of work to score an interview and interview prep (read - cracking the pm interview)

Do you understand what PM role is? It’s a generalist role which is mixtures of 3-4 roles and that too varies from company to company. How can there be a course about such vague role ?

I would advise dont go in this path unless absolutely no other option. This rôle requires you to good at multiple things. Not for everyone

Understand the job requirements from a PM anywhere you’d like to apply. Identify the skill gap (if you find this tough, go through a few interviews to do this or talk to PMs who might know you). Find courses that help you bridge the skill gap, while also working on a portfolio on the side (The Product Folks, Airtribe, all offer whatsapp and slack spaces where they put out problem statements you can work on and add to your portfolio).

No course will get you a job, only you will get yourself a job. Courses will help you practice things you did not get a chance to practice through work experience.
