Don't copy the west in everything. The west society is a contract based society. We are a culture based society. There are a few people who do such inhumane acts. But overall take any normal middle family they treat domestic workers decently. Atleast in South. I can't comment on north india.

If there is one thing that we need to copy from the West, that is dignity in labour.

Also do you work in a company for ₹10k/month of they treat well in "cultural" manner ?

You are an absolute idiot if you believe this to be true. The nerve to support feudal systems by saying it’s part of our culture is disgusting. The fact that you can say something so stupid openly, in a public forum really reflects the profound stupidity that has enveloped your brain.

Minimum wage is not 30k in India

Yes, we don't have a fair minimum wage.

How do you decide on 30k as a fair minimum wage? Sapna aaya tha kya?

FuzzyNugget

Why would you pay 30k for domestic help, most people have help in their house for not more than 2 hours/day. Assuming they come in 25 days a month, that’s 50 hours.
At 100 rupees an hour, that’s 5k per month. Usually they would work 4/5 houses making 20/25k.

Exactly! The minimum wage is okay. But we need to be practical with the amount/hour .

It is good to learn how to cook and be self reliant. Also you are comparing early salary with salary of people with decades of experience and have family to support.

We are self reliant. We are a family of 4 with no cook. We cook ourself. I never compared early salary with decades of experience. I am mainly pointing out that the average salary of people in India is still less. They cannot afford to give 30K to househelp. Your poll options are pretty black and white. Is someone is earning more than 1L than yes they should pay more but having a minimum wage of 30K will not work in this country where majority of people still have less salary.

  1. Maids work in multiple houses
  2. Flexible timings
  3. Day Offs
  4. Low Quality work 90% of the time
  5. Ideally we shouldn’t even pay 5K for that.
And where in the world the concept of minimum wage came in, they’re easily making more than 50K per month, I might be saying less for tier 1-2 cities.
We pay our maid 8K per month ( she asked for 10K )
She only does the dishes and cleaning ( 1 Bhk ) and dinner.
I do laundry, cleaning on weekends, cooking my meals, cleaning accessories and etc.

Many people do moon lighting to increase the revenue, including cyber security professionals. What kind of quality do you expect after paying ₹10k/month. Also doing my own laundry is a bare minimum, not something to be proud of.

Most of the indian job doesn't pay 30k per month then how they will pay 30k per month to maid

Most people don't need Maid for basic chores. Do you work for cheap labour if your employer doesn't have money in their bank account?

A fair minimum wage should be there even when the supply is more. Also power dynamics and lack of education play a big role in this.

Considering this doesn't answer any questions. What's a fair salary for a maid per month?

TwirlyCupcake

Our maid collectively makes more than govt minimum wage.

Government minimum wage is unfair in India. We need a dignified number for all professions.

CosmicQuokka

idk, what's fair what's not, annual minimum wage in fellow south east asian countries is about half of per capita GDP, going by this guesstimate india also aligns similarly.

Maybe minimum wages would also increase when our GDP increases.
