You have to shift at the first available opportunity.
If you target a particular industry, and the longer you wait, lesser is your chance to change out of banking.
If your aim is to shift out , you have to run at the first chance.

True to some extent. If he is working in a dead end role (like ops support) then he should run at first chance.
However if one is working in nuanced roles like Strategy, PO/PM/PMO, Marketing - they have multiple exit options.

It's doesn't matter what role he is into. Most of people over estimate the ability to shift industries. After 7-8 yrs of experience become very difficult to change sectors. After 12 it's impossible. At senior leadership levels some manage to do it. But it's mostly due to contacts and luck.
Changing industry is not easy. It's very difficult.
