IIM Shillong Working Executive MBA. Is it worth doing it for ~14 lakh rupees?

IIM Shillong Working Executive MBA is approx 14 lakh rupees tuition fees for 2 weeks campus+ rest online education. They give a proper MBA degree and it is not a certificate or diploma. They do not offer placements for the Working Executive MBA as they are only allowing working people to do this MBA. I am trying to understand if it is worth doing an MBA from IIM Shillong.

Yes, IIM Shillong is a top B school
Yes, the IIM brand name is big enough
No, IIM Shillong MBA is expensive
No, MBA is a waste of time & money

What is your definition of worth?

As simple as that you may think it is (in lay man language) as to get the best deal for the product for the money paid. I am trying not to get too deep and philosophical here.

Assuming, best deal == money returns

Since program has no placement support, I don’t think it will help in a significant way.

I would look at median salary these guys earn. The alumni network is only good if they are placed where you want to be

  1. Compare your current package with the average and median package offers of the B-school
  2. Can you get the same/better package within your current profile in next 3 years?
  3. Can the B school placements get you into your dream profile and company?

If the answer to 2 is no and 3 is yes then go for the MBA else not.

Great point. For me the answer to 2 is No and 3 is maybe (that's the hope). For 1 - for the working executive degree this information isn't available.

Bits Pilani Wilp and Goa Institute of Management pgdm are good options and affordable.

Use the 14L to start and run a business. If you fail, you learn a priceless lesson. If you succeed, you learn a priceless lesson.

Thanks. I have been in corporate life so long that I don't feel like business is an option for me anymore. Do you have in mind what businesses one can start and run with 14 lakhs?

As of 19-Mar-2025, a good 50% think MBA is a waste of time and energy.

Of the remaining 50%:

  • 24% think it is expensive
  • 26% are positive for IIM Shillong MBA

Overall, it is a equally divided result. For cost conscious, it looks like a no go for the reason it is expensive but a good option for those who can afford it easily.

Thanks all for your voting and participation 🙏
