Is AI going to make humans useless by 2026?

So, Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, wrote a big essay called 'Machines of Loving Grace: How AI Could Transform the World for the Better.' He talks about how super-smart AI, or AGI, could change the next 100 years. But instead of focusing on the risks, he looks at how awesome the future could be if we get super-intelligent AI right.

In his essay, Dario says that no one can predict the future with certainty, but he tries to make educated guesses. He believes that powerful AI could come as early as 2026, which is just around the corner! He describes powerful AI as being smarter than a Nobel Prize winner in fields like biology, programming, and math. Imagine an AI that can solve unsolved math problems, write amazing novels, and create complex code. That's pretty mind-blowing!

Dario breaks down his essay into five key areas where AI could make a huge positive impact: biology and physical health, neuroscience and mental health, economic development and poverty, peace and governance, and work and meaning.

For biology and physical health, he thinks AI could speed up discoveries by 10 times, helping us cure diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's, and even extend human lifespan to 150 years! In neuroscience and mental health, AI could help cure mental illnesses like depression and schizophrenia, making our minds healthier and happier.

When it comes to economic development and poverty, Dario believes AI could help developing countries catch up with developed ones, reducing inequality. For peace and governance, he suggests that AI could help make fairer decisions in justice systems and even help maintain global peace.

Finally, Dario talks about work and meaning. He admits this is a tough question but believes that even if AI does most jobs better than humans, there will still be things for us to do. He suggests that in the short term, humans will still be needed for certain tasks, especially in the physical world. But in the long run, we might need new ways to organize our economy, like a universal basic income.

Dario warns that we need to fight for a good outcome because dystopian futures are possible. So, while AI has the potential to make our lives amazing, we need to be careful and make sure it benefits everyone.

What do you think? Will AI make humans useless by 2026, or will it create a better world for all of us?
