Is this a new scam?

I came to Bangalore 2 weeks ago. this is my first time visit to Bangalore. One fine day I was casually walking to my PG after having a tea at chai house. in the middle of a road a person with his newborn baby and wife approach me with folding hands. He asked me if I speak hindi. I nodded, then he said Iam from Maharashtra and he came here for job, but his master has kicked him out and not given him salary. He has no money for food and to travel back. He asked me to give him 300. I sensed it might be scam but being an emotional guy I thought 300 is not a big deal. I said I don't have cash but I can pay via phonepe. he showed me his qr on mobile. A thought ran in my mind does he has no one who he can call and ask for online money if he has working smart phone. when I started typing the amount 300 he said sir 300 for one person, pls pay for my wife too. I said I only have this much money only. I paid and walked off quickly. I think I'm scammed but it could be a genuine case too.

tell me guys have you faced/heard this before. this might probably aware someone in future.

This is not a new scam. After reaching Bangalore (July 2023), went out for a stroll in the evening. Husband, wife and son came to me with the same script. I even said I don't have cash, but he quickly showed his QR. I paid 500. As soon as I paid, 2-3 families from the corner tried grabbing my hand forcibly and asked me to pay more and said isse kya hoga. I came out from their clutches and went back to my room. Told my friends about it, they said "yeah we too paid when we first came here but Tera jyada kata" 😭

Experienced this in Sarjapur and Whitefield.

They might have their own community on grapevine 😂

It is. It's form of begging to get higher amounts with emotional manipulation and social engineering tricks. I came across two different groups approaching with 'hindi aata he kya' in a 1 km walk in HSR. It's very common. Don't engage or pay attention. Once you respond, you will get crowded by the group into sentimental stories.

For educational purposes check the r/bangalore subreddit and search posts with 'scam' mentions and you will be familiar with all the types that are running.

I sensed I was being scammed still I got into it. I'll have to become tougher mentally.

I was also scammed in exactly same way during June 2022. They wanted money for bus ticket, I told I will book for them. But somehow they convinced me to give them money and I gave 800.

1 week after this incident I saw the same couple again. They were asking money again for traveling back, and realised I had been fooled 🙂.

I was scammed too. On my first day of bangalore I gave 470rs. And his story is exactly same. That time I only have around 1000 in my purse and the way he tell his story I felt bad and gave half of my money. 🥲🥲
