First of all he could have casually said that this was weeks ago and that person tries to farm for likes repeatedly and stuff like that.
But most importantly if you are planning to travel somewhere why not ask for a leave and be a professional about it??

Want to lie? There are 100s of options, why lie sickness? This is the most juvenile lie to opt for.
Sick leaves you get immediately. Other leaves need to be informed in advance, maybe he wanted a day off urgently

And why would managers care if the leave was sick or casual? In my US based company there is no separate leave we get a bundle of days that I can take for either short term sickness or casual stuff.
