Previously, going to the USA was primarily for money.... Now, it's more to do with better quality of life ....

That's true

Not sure how you mean that... Pretty much all of my friends/cousins who return from the US or even come here for vacation say quality of life is a lot better in India now. Anyone at a decent income range here can get:

  • a decent rental house,
  • access to domestic help,
  • metro access in most cities,
  • easy and quick home delivery of almost anything
  • digital payments.

While you'd have to earn much higher than average income in US for the same standard of life...

I was thinking of studying in Australia but many people have told me that with all the recession going on the US is still better for IT than Australia. Australia is a safe bet in terms of visas but people have been telling me there is racism and securing a job is not easy there. The US is also the same right now in terms of the visa and job market. Really confused about what to do.

Aus is not good for IT. It's good for staring business like opening up a small hotel or driving cabs or getting small jobs.

I personally feel that it is a lost cause not now but for a few years. Anyone who moved to the US in 90s or early 2000s probably made the right choice and would have definitely made it big, but people who are moving to US now they're not going to make it big except for a minimal 5-10 percent of them. My reasons:

  1. Increasing hatred towards south Asians especially towards Indians now.
  2. Daily incidents of shootings
  3. First ones to get kicked out during recession
  4. No matter what you do, you will never be enough for them to be treated equally. Take an example of Vivek Ramaswamy who was initially running for President despite people acknowledging his potential, they wouldn't vote for him to be a president.
  5. Healthcare is extremely costly and wait times are high too

And rest of the conveniences available in India that someone highlighted above makes it easier for me to make a decision not to go to US. Had an opportunity from Goldman Sachs in 2019 and didn't opt for it primarily because of these reasons and I have zero regrets.

Money user to be the biggest factor earlier but people are making crores in India, and I agree not everyone is making crores but people are and I would assume anyone working hard to move to US puts in the same level of effort in acquiring skills can make it big in India.

issues that I have with India:

  1. Pollution
  2. Civic sense
  3. People treating humans like shit
  4. Corrupt system

Except for pollution 2,3 and 4 are quite prevalent in US too. If 1-4 points eally matter to someone then they should instead opt for nordic countries. But that's just me, everyone has different expectations from life.

US still has much better legal system than India and value for human life. Healthcare is very costly, but please don’t say it is same as India’s.

2, 3 & 4 are definitely better in the US, no comparison. Corruption in the US happens at the lobbying level, not below that

  1. Hatred towards South Asians is seen more on twitter than in real life, it can be constrained to a large extent given you stay in a decent neighbourhood. Anyways indians have their own community and I have seen them celebrate everything from Chatt Puja, Diwali, Holi and what not in absolute swag.

  2. About shooting. This becomes like a show stopper argument, which is a half baked truth. The correct number of Indian deaths abroad due to violent attacks is 3.8 of 1.34M/yr, or 1 in 350,000/yr

The number of Indians who die prematurely due to air pollution is 1 in 800, or 450x more lethal. Source: https://x.com/deedydas/status/1864875316336038121?t=V3XKHkeCWpa38H7xhknOvQ&s=19

  1. Yes. Recession is risky. This is the hardest part. Even getting an opportunity now is hard, but those who have it, better not cry and glorify india which sucks.

  2. True, you won't be first class citizen, but why do you care. You have access to all facilities, as long as you can afford it, you would have your own indian circle whom you will hang out with. Who cares.

  3. Healthcare is costly, absolutely true, but you have corporate insurance, maybe a personal one too, even then it's costly, yes. Most people fly to India for scheduled treatments of themselves or their parents, and even carry medicines with them from here.

I have been hearing about the end of It as a career at every recession.

Biggest adv of US, it's english speaking, merit valuing market. No country has the life and opportunities that they can offer. Even without that, I would say, it's better being a blue collar worker there than living as a SDE in India especially for the GC person. I really feel sorry for them.

Every body can not get GC just like that and Wait period is almost 12-15 years and even more.

US is great in the early stages of your career as you can earn way better than your Indian counterparts. The more late you enter US markets, the more you see parity in income.

Does L1 visa after 10 YOE pays in US similar to what a manager or SM will get in India?

GoofyKoala
GoofyKoala

Depends on the company. Product companies will justify the pay, Service companies will cut corners and you will be lowballed.

Clearly we would like to go to USA due to all sorts of problems in India, but it seems that place is right, but unfortunately time is not with us. Even Indians staying in USA are worrying due to H1B visa revocation, F1 denial, endless waiting for GC and even no guarantee of permanent staying unless citizenship is acquired.

Lucky were those who went to US in the 1st wave of 1970s and 80s who all have become citizens in few years.

The 2nd wave was the IT wave from early 1990s until 2007 before the recession hit. Most 2nd wave immigrants somehow managed to get GC atleast due to less applicants.

The 3rd wave lasted between 2008 to 2016 which were the MS in US pursuers. They took advantage of weaker $$ and FAANG boom. But unfortunately they are the ones stuck in GC long wait or even lost jobs in recession in last few years. Finally those who went after 2017 for either study or work are the most unfortunate to not only face MAGA racism but also covid, Trump and what not. Not sure what future hold for them and for us who are dreaming to be in US someday in life. Let’s keep the conversation going and hope some of us will land in US someday for sure. Thank you!
