Poll 2: Availability of SQL platform

Do you feel there’s a lack of an efficient platform tailored for PM to learn SQL?

Thank you so much for your participation 🙏🏻

Definitely, there’s a clear gap.
Some resources exist , but they can be better.
There are plenty of good platforms available.
I haven’t looked, so I’m not sure.

Try this - https://www.stratascratch.com/

Also, don't differentiate your learning on the basis of which content is for a Data Analyst or a Product Manager. Make yourself capable enough that, imagine you are working at an early stage startup and the founders don't want to hire a Product Analyst separately to write SQL queries to make a dashboard for you, you are solely dependent on yourself to create your own product dashboard. And mind you, once you start writing advanced queries, there is no looking back. It's addictive.

Wow! This looks like a good platform. Agreed on acquiring enough skills to build a dashboard from scratch but I have seen a very few doing that. About addictive part - man, SQL is just ❤️ great to hear this from you :)

In my org which is an early stage seed funded startup we have 4 APMs and we all create our own dashboard. Our founder clearly said that we are not hiring a Product Analyst for at least a year.

Although, we took help from a Data Scientist initially who worked with our founder in their previous org to create a compang level dashboard across all products. That was some insane advanced level stuff which only dedicated Analysts could only do. That's it. Product dashboards are our responsibility.

Also, glad to know that you liked the website.

There are plenty to learn from.

  1. W3school
  2. Hackerrank
  3. Leetcode sql list
  4. https://pgexercises.com

Thanks for sharing! Didn’t know about the 4th one. There are many more like these - datacamp, datalemur, and of course udemy, coursera, Youtube etc.. Curious to know if any PM here have used any of these platform to learn SQL. If yes, which ones and how much of that learnings were relevant?

When you are trying to study SQL, avoid the mindset that a PM will be studying SQL. Start from the basics and solve accordingly. SQL as a language is same for PM, SDE, DA,DE.

Login to the platforms i mentioned ealier and go step wise. Also, please don’t payup a hefty amount to learn this.

Thanks for sharing! May I ask what did you like about this platform compared to others?

It has SQL problems based on real-world scenarios with better question sets than LeetCode. Overall, you are most likely to get similar problems in interviews as on data lemur. So this is more helpful when preparing for SQL interviews.

Simply take up an SQL for analytics course on udemy. Costs about ₹500 on most days.

PrancingWaffle

This is definitely the simplest way to start. I just find it harder to setup local SQL server to start writing queries when taking up courses on coursera, udemy or anything in that kind of format.

The course is likely to have instructions about installation too. But TBH, you don't need to setup an SQL server at all. Use Google Collab or any other online editor like programiz.com or db-fiddle.com

Check metabase you don’t need to know sql to write complex queries
.. it’s totally ui based

PrancingWaffle
PrancingWaffle

Yes, Metabase has improved a lot in the last few years but i didn’t know the UI is good enough to write complex SQL queries. And I have also not seen people using that functionality for some reasons. Would be great to know your insight about usage patterns if any 🙏🏻

I use that functionality almost everyday. Check code academy , w3 schools too.
In short this space has many players so don’t do this unless you’re clear you can make 10x better product.

Yes, even I'm looking for resources. There are plenty of resources from the perspective of a Data analyst, but I'm not sure how much depth of topics should I cover

PrancingWaffle

Thanks for your comment! And yes, I have gone through a lot of SQL courses but most of those covers concepts that are not really relevant to a PM. I think something more relevant can improve overall efficiency and effectiveness.

Look up 8weeksSQL challenge. You have 8 case studies to solve and the SQL create script is preloaded for you

In addition to what others have stated, I'd add SQLPad.io to the list
