Is taking a debt worth it to study abroad?
Got into multiple top-20 schools in the US, UK, and Canada. Have some initial liquidity and the plan to pre-pay the whole loan post-graduation. However, my net worth will be blown
I recently came across some articles.

Does ragging of such scale where the seniors time and again disrespect the juniors and humiliate them really happens at top B-Schools( i m talking about IIM A,B,C,L,K,I, FMS, XLRI etc) l.
I am from one of an old IIT and haven't faced any ragging or harrasment from seniors over here apart from the freshers party where the seniors themselves told that if you are not comfortable then you can leave. Not one incident after that. Instead it has been a total opposite scenario and the seniors are too helpful here in a variety of ways. I have friends in IIT Bombay, Kanpur and Delhi and they too told me the same thing.
I was very surprised and astonished when I found out that kids age 18 years old aren't engaged in ragging at IITs but adults age 23 years+ doing their MBAs are doing the same at IIMs.
PS: I plan to pursue an MBA from an IIM in the future but such incidents are a big turn off for me hence I wanted to know the reality.
Go abroad or to ISB. Better learning environment with peers that have actually worked and not just passed a speed maths quiz
So called ISB grads gained that work ex since they failed at the "speed math quiz" over multiple years and eventually had to settle for ISB. Had they cleared it before, they wouldn't have joined ISB. Not a single MBA aspirant preparing for entrance exams starts with ISB as their top choice.
What about HBS, Wharton, INSEAD . They failed the math quiz too?
Nah. I’m more inclined to @AmusedPM’s view. In our company we’ve seen that people from IIMs aren’t really that much of what is hyped. We’ve also noticed people from other B schools do better in fact.
The reason we have quants and speed math is to have somewhat of a level playing ground for non commerce or mgmt background candidates. That’s an argument for another day as I don’t see the point there. The same IIM qualified candidate might in fact struggle to get in at INSEAD , ISB , HBS or Wharton. They’ve got that exposure and experience that puts them ahead of your IIM grad IMO.
Went through the long rant on medium, so some of those things are true including an initiation process, which is usually much toned down and has a central message (say plagiarism(dont copy) , tardiness(dont be late) ). I am not a full supporter of how that is done, and it can vary batch by batch, seems like the author has seen the extreme end. But in the same post i can highlight positives around how much interest and time seniors spend with juniors to help them out.
I feel the main culprit is the system of placements and as indian students very few of us lack the knowledge of which domain we want to pursue. We have very little exposure, so we end up prioritising based on salary (placement salaries).
A lot of these systems, day wise placements, intiations, group preference over individual preference are archaic and needs revisiting. But not so much to deter joining, i learnt a few hard life lessons which have served me well.
Regarding astronomical salaries quoted few older iims have taken a stance against it and release a detailed report. But media wants ctrs, so what you would see is click bait salaries trending.
So short summary is the iims and their placement systems are not perfect, but if such a critique was to be done for other educational institutes you will find similar stories. Join iims for good networking and to prepare yourself for the rigour that roles in the future can hold for you.
No, this is uncommon. Survived an older IIM :)

As I look back on my time at IIM, I am sad that it did not live up to my expectations. The name IIM carries weight, still I feel only IIM A/B/C should be called IIMs. The new and baby IIMs are dark black spots on the brand of IIMs. Even ...
Man, even if you get hired, what will you say? I work for Maalish? BC giggolo lagega logon ko
Folks with considerable experience in startup world, do mba passouts from IIMs and other top tier business schools are actually worth the salaries they are paid?
Looking for genuine and non diplomatic answers since it will be anonymous. It is upto you to reveal the name of the company you resigned from.
