Should Employees be punished for what they post on social media ?

Recently saw a post where a girl who’s started working got fired from her job due to some drama between her and the a RW mob on X and they kept tagging the company and forced her to be terminated. Haven’t really dived deep to check what the actual matter is but my point here is that should companies take action against employees for what they do on social media which doesn’t really involve the company.

Are there laws regarding this or anything mentioned when we join a company and does this set a bad precedent which jeopardises free speech ?

Companies have social media policies in place. Don’t know the deeper context though. Could you share the post in question

This is post I was referring to. This is by the guy that started the witch hunt or whatever you call it against the girl.

The squint guy is a well known RW troll. Makes sense why people on grapevine would still not name companies at times because it really isnt easy out there.

She was normalising hate against a particular community in the post . I think this is a case of ‘aa bail mujhe mar’. Knowing who squint neon handle she replied on a post which was not meant for her in any way . Heard that the ceo of the company is from the same community. Any kind of hate against any community is not justifiable. Holding a person responsible for something the community has done in the past.

Have seen such a case first hand. I feel these people are just better off doing something else. They spoil the atmosphere of the whole team and also the name of the company.

If you are using your company name for clout in X then you are also responsible for the consequences for your actions

She wasn't, they traced her to her LinkedIn account

Didn't Elon say that he would cover any legal fees if someone got fired for what they said on twitter?

Companies don’t care unless you post something truly despicable. I highly doubt she actually got fired

I doubt too. Apparently from what I’ve read cops are at her place and the whole family is hiding now which made me think all that is rumours.

No , especially in cases like such

Though all FAANG bro/gals minting money in the name of their companies should be checked

In the post u created on Grapevine mentioned "....which doesn't really involve the company." in the first para.

But on twitter the company profile was tagged, a post was made on their clients and then many twitter users started questioning the company in tweets and getting bad reputation from community for not taking any action against such employee.

In this scenario, any company would take action against the employee bcz it is the community that's pushing the company to do. Once read all the replies and then u ll understand

Yeah like I said it just popped up on my TL given the publicity it’s got. I however believe there should be a law or something involved a process for ex. In this case it’s more direct , hate speech against a particular community and hence she got fired.

Although there would be cases where it’s on the grey area and this sets a bad example where just cause a group of people who disagree with something can have someone removed from an org if the org isn’t a strong one or doesn’t want to deal with the negative PR.

Moreover as long as it doesn’t affect how an employee works and is done in a non official capacity or time. Example : This was her personal X account and she isn’t really a senior ranking official or spokesperson for the org per se. People would be talking the same kind of things within closed doors. Her fault was she posted it on a public form. I in no way stand by what she said and believe she should be reprimanded for the same but in a much more different manner than action being taken like this due to a social media mob hunt.

That's why post anything with your alt account or don't reveal your details. Some months ago I saw a body count tweet go viral under which a guy commented something absurd. People were @ the company with "is this the type of employee you hire" buddy had to delete the tweet later.

My company had a case where someone posted against a clients culture of layoffs on LinkedIn and then the client used the same screenshot in a sales meeting with us. You can guess the company, pretty screwed up right now.

Anyways my org didn’t do anything since what u post on ur personal handle isn’t really their business. From what I heard, he wasn’t even reprimanded. Having said that they do have policies against posts that tag the company name

Usually there would be guidelines around what cannot be done on social media, while employed at an organisation. And if you've the company name on the profile, or that gets added to the conversation in anyway, the employee's words on social media will be 'perceived' by others as the company's voice (while it's actually not).

It's very difficult to run companies, especially when false things spread across like wildfire. So, usually companies will ask employees to refrain from doing anything that will, in any way, affect the company.

Ideally, no one should use their company names for anything personal (be it on topmate or YouTube or LinkedIn posts). All of them are just a random day away from regretting their decisions.
