Starting my first PM role!

I will be joining as a PM next week in a media company. What are the three most important things to keep in mind in order to excel in one's first PM role?

Be a patient listener, Develop good rapport with teams you're dependent on, Don't feel entitled.

Brilliant points made already. To add a couple of more:

  1. Understand the problem, don't fall in love with the solution
  2. Talk to as many users as possible regularly
  3. Analytics should be your best friend

Hi @Chillbill I love your first point. I personally like to spend a lot of time obsessing over user problems and really getting into the knitty gritties. A problem well defined is always half solved.

Also could you suggest any good analytics tool I can use on my job? I have studied Mixpanel from a couple of YouTube videos, it did look very useful although I can yet to use it in a real business setting

Engineers, by default, will not respect you. It is how it is. Don't take it personally. Just continue to do your work.

Any particular advice on how I can build a rappot with the eng team and work towards earning more of their trust?

Just doing good work, protecting them when a situation arises, appreciating them when they do good work, being honest with them, and most importantly giving them clarity. Ghumao meet bilkul bhi unko.

Apart of all other things mentioned above -

  1. Documentation should be your first friend
  2. Never hesitate to learn new things
  3. Keep reading, learning about competition

Yep learning new things is one of the top things on my list, that I plan to in the next few months, especially about the dynamics of my industry.
