Surviving vs Thriving

They say, “Money can’t buy happiness,” but let’s be honest—money can buy a home in Kolkata, and that’s pretty close to happiness! Here I am, 13 years still into my first company, earning 25 LPA (Wife is a homemaker btw), and comfortably living in my own home, with my entire daily commute costing me ₹80. Meanwhile, my friends in Bengaluru are paying ₹80 just to step out of their apartments.

Every time I visit Bengaluru, I feel like I’ve entered a parallel universe. A ₹25,000 rent there gets you a “spacious” 1BHK (where “spacious” means you can stretch both hands without hitting the walls). Meanwhile, my Kolkata house has enough room for a cricket match in the living room.

Then there's the food situation. Here, I can get a proper meal for ₹100, but in Bengaluru, that’s just the GST on a dosa. And don’t even get me started on kids' school fees. In Kolkata, parents complain if the fees cross ₹1 lakh a year. In Bengaluru, ₹1 lakh is what you pay just for the school bus!

But the real question is: how are they surviving on salaries similar to mine? My theories:

  1. They have secret second jobs – maybe as Uber drivers after office hours.

  2. They live in shared apartments – seven software engineers, one mattress, and an air fryer.

  3. They are all secretly funded by venture capitalists – because let’s face it, the cost of living there needs an investment round.

Despite all this, I respect my Bengaluru friends. They navigate traffic like trained warriors, survive skyrocketing rents, and still have the energy to post café photos on Instagram. Meanwhile, I sit comfortably in my affordable Kolkata home, sipping cha, and wondering if I should ever move. (Spoiler alert: Probably not.)

This sounds a bit over the top man. My son's fee in a convent is around 80k/y, his bus fee is around 30k/y - unless you're going to an international, international (twice ).Till 6 years back we paid 18k/m for 2bhk rent, now own our flat near electronic City - loan free. No way the gst cost of a dosa is 100 bucks unless you're eating at a 5 star hotel. Nonsense post, don't post just cos you want to show off. There should be truth in it, moron.

Love life ✅ Close to parents ✅ Peaceful home✅ Family time ✅ Good food✅ Health✅

You are living a luxurious life. Super duper lucky. You are not missing anything staying away from Bengaluru. Able to afford this lifestyle without your spouse working is itself a big achievement. Something that many secretly crave for.

It all sounds good but would you find a like minded peer group, the same level of weekend getaways and facilities, dining options etc there?

Kolkata is a dead city. No jobs or infra. If any bengali wants to make it in life, their first step is to get out of Kolkata

Worst city I've lived in by far, and I've lived in 6. Zero public transportation, locals are rude to outsiders, roads are horrendous, traffic is killer especially near airport, people drive like they have 9 lives, there is no service attitude in the working class, you just get treated like crap in restaurants, cafes, etc. Need I say more?

I also feel sorry for all your friends. Your government, politicans was not able to create policies to attract companies to your states

All you guys do is come and overcrowd our city, ruin it and whine like a little babies. Maybe ask your governments to do something

My brother makes 40LPA with 8 years of experience . 25 is too less for 13 years of experience. So when you are in a city that is expensive, you get paid accordingly. Sometimes even more. Kolkatta is one shit city and too crowded. Yeah everything is cheap there but so is your salary. And don’t forget you are the only one earning. Most couples in bangalore together save more than what you make in a year. I feel bad for you

I have lived in both kolkata and Bangalore. You have made exaggerations on both sides just for engagement

Peace > Family > Work (Satisfaction) > Money

Life is sorted if you have made the above expression balanced.

This order is directly proportional to your savings/ or career stage. Peace comes at a lot of cost in the early stages of the career.

I have my parents house but I bought a 3BHK for weekend home. cost 3.5k/ Sqft. 6 KM away from the heart of Kolkata . It's a stand alone G+5 building and the majority of the apartments here are like that. A gated community can cost about 1.5k extra/ sqft.

I'm not able to wrap my head around the pace at which rents increase in Bangalore.
