Tech Consultant looking for a switch to PM
Hey guys, I am a CSE engineer with a MBA from IIM. I've 3 yrs of workex as a software engineer for a product company, and 2.5 years of post MBA exp as a tech consultant. Looking for a switch to product. Got some advice that I won't be able to break into PM and need to go for APM. Need some help validating this, since I feel my experience should be sufficient to start as a PM.

I don’t think there’s absolute Yes/No answer to this.
Many people directly get PM roles from IIM campus, so it’s a NO. At the same time, market forces are skewed (demand vs supply), there would be very less hiring managers who will take the risk. So it’s a Yes!
My suggestion - If you’ve any domain specific experience (lending, eComm, SaaS), use it and make a pitch as functional-expert ready to explore product world. Start building some small protos with AI tools like bolt, lovable etc. Finding a mentor will be another way to make this journey fruitful.

Thanks for your response. I am already working on building something on Glide. Will look forward to enhance my hands on through that. Also, my experience is mainly FinTech, so looking into these industries.

I was in the same exact bucket at a big 4..DM me

I've DM'd you

I see you work for pwc. Check internal jobs if possible. That will give you a good start

I have resigned. I didnt want to move into product in PwC, but rather into a product firm. I would thrive better in a culture of product.
