I have been told it's to look more accomplished and ask for a large dowry when they get married.

It's like a tradition. Narayana college> btech >USA>1cr dowry and show off. Only 2% really go for higher education. Ppl feel proud saying their daughter, son, son in law in US while chit chat with neighbours. But i feel nothing wrong in going there. Whoever got capability will go no matter. But peer pressure makes other face the burden of financials .

Those days are gone as far as I can see very few are interested in marrying NRI's.

masters is a quicker way to visa and settlement in the US. Even if you dont get to settle there, a few years of US experience will get you multifold pay in India. With a master degree in addition, you get pay that is much higher the T1 degrees in India. If you win a green card, you get a better quality of life there, if you dont you can come back to india with a pay that sometimes equivalent to the USD you were earning there.

The obsession for a US master is not just within social circles, but also within corporate circles. You could be a janitor there, but upon return, tech companies will pay you top dollar.

There is lot of emphasis on education across all strata of society which got exacerbated by schools like narayana and chaitanya.

For those who couldnt make it to the best top 30-40 institutes, their second best chance to prove themselves is by going abroad. In my village, people send their kids to us due to status pressure very similar to punjab. Many do stupid course but they feel that those who stayed backed in India are not capable of going abroad. Plus the Indian mentality to convert to rupees they feel $80k job 55-60 lpa job is better than 3.5 in TCS.

Many parents don't even know if their kids are doing well but simply the upgrade in lifestyle they feel they are doing better in US than India. Many villages are getting hollowed out as the young are leaving the countries in hoardes, recent shooting and killing of multiple Indians in US is bringing light to realties of situation. Many parents are reconsidering sending not but for many US can open doors in getting good matches, higher status in their village and respect even though they earn less than many businesses in india
