TIL: Gas App was shut down by Discord in November. A few thoughts below 👇

How is Nikita Bier somebody to be regarded? Why is he so famous on X? For making the same app twice, both times being able to sell it off just at the right time, before it becomes irrelevant ultimately (because typically school/college confessions pages are like that, shortlived, like ask.fm)

And this then in turn got VCs unnecessarily excited about this space, couple of investments globally in lookalike apps in other geographies. What a scam, this entire thing. Fool me twice!

@BetterGopher No but that's cool. Like sometimes local builders understand the market better and just implement better accordingly (example Gojek building out bike taxis in Indonesia, Uber might not have been able to)

My issue is the 'Pump and Dump' in this case. And doing it two times over :/

Nikita bier is a pro. He just knows vitality at its best. No one can do that like he did. King of Consumer Internet. He has immense knowledge and spills facts on X that’s why he is famous

The Discord one is a head scratcher but the first time he got acquired by Facebook made complete sense.

He built something that cool that high school teens in the US were using a lot. At the time Facebook was dead amongst teens in the US, and Instagram was losing out to TikTok on the content/browsing front and Snapchat for photo messaging/stories (better filters/streaks, etc). He got acquired and then started work as a PM working on new products and since then Instagram has stabilised.

It has a clear direction as a content platform led by influencers/reels but still attractive enough as a social platform that you log onto to check up on your friends and share said memes/influencer content.

In essence, I think he played a part in making instagram cool again.

For your question, on what will happen to his copycats. They will most likely fail. There is an Indian startup called Slick which raised 1.6 million to copy his product for India. However, Nikita Bier apparently raised 0 VC dollars for Tbh (or very little) and pulled off a successful acquisition.
