What does a relationship manager actually does in a bank?
I’ve got a job as a fresher in HDFC as relationship manager, but I’ve no idea what they do or what my career will look like with this job. I’m a marketing student, always wanted a job in marketing and I don’t know how i’ll be able to work in a bank or in future will i be able to switch to marketing after working in bank?

Depends of you are a corporate RM or retail RM. In case of corporate RM, you build relationships with companies, extend loans and other credit facilities, perform numerous documentation. Your main target is to generate income through processing fees and cross selling other products.

Thank you so much !!

Are you in corporate?

Your job is sales. Straightforward targets for your branch for banking and 3rd party products. Switching to marketing is tough unless you are in the corporate office.

Got it, i also think it’ll be mostly sales. I’ve no interest in banking or finance jobs, will it be easier if I try and switch in first 6-7 months? Also for the context I’ll complete my MBA from IIML this year. And graduation is also in marketing

Idk about the actual job, but since I have an RM at HDFC and I do ping her quite often - credit card, cheque, upgrades, address change, loan. And she calls me for - investments and fd etc
Banking is painful without an RM

Okay now I’ve a vague idea, thanks
