Working from Office

Am I the only one who likes working from office (Bengaluru)? I go to office every day, and it helps me to be more productive.

  • There will be no distractions

  • Team mates will be around, and if there is any queries, I can straight away ask them rather than typing a message or setting up a call

  • Occasional chit chats

  • Having lunch together

  • being a part of all the conversations happening

  • Managers works from office - a good rapport with him as well

  • Free food

  • Free Transport (can mates - another plus point)

  • Good work set-up

  • Meet new people almost every day

  • Build/deepen real connections every day

  • Interact with folks starting from entey level to senior directors or VPs regularly (L1 - L9 is the range mentioned here)

FYI: I moved to Bengaluru for work, although I've the option to work completely remote.

One of my team member even mentioned that he has not yet been able to connect with the team member who has joined before me, like how he could connect with me.

I understand that once people have family, it will be difficult to manage everything. One of my team mate actually mentioned that, he used to do/manage everything properly before Covid, but it's kind of not easy/lazy since Covid.

I also realise that not everyone has the above perks, but still.

Commute can be an issue. I travel 50+ KMs every day to and fro. I start by 7 am in the morning to morning traffic, and take around 75 minutes in the evening (I can survive the traffic without having to use my mobile 😂)

I do miss my family frequently, but I do have the flexibility to go home and stay a few days when I want. Staying alone in a service apartment is the only disadvantage as of now.

Let me answer those point by point. At least as much as I can.

Distractions: this depends on the individual. I find it extremely distracting at the office because there are so many people talking around. At home, I don't have any distractions. Team mates: with respect to them being around, chit chats, lunch together etc, it depends on how your team mates are and how well everyone gets along with each other. Things can get messy if people don't get along but have to work together since they are in the same team. Office politics also plays a role. You are lucky if you don't have to deal with those and have great team mates. That's not the case everywhere.

Free food: I don't get that at office Free transport: I don't get that and have to travel by bike. I absolutely loathe doing this. Work setup: I am neutral on this. I have good work setup in office and at home.

Meet new people everyday: Again, seems to be just you Build/deepen connections every day: not everyone
Interact with folks from L1 to L9: not everyone

To shorten this, you seem to be assuming everyone has the exact same situation as you do.

I just read you saying you realise not everyone gets those perks. But I get absolutely none of them. So that's rather the extreme opposite. And I missed putting this in my reply but I agree that there are benefits of work from the office. So, I am all for a hybrid schedule.

I agree to this. Actually, having good team members are essential for a good experience. Another question: don't you feel bored or burnt-out when you continuosly work from home?

that traffic you are surviving is the reason I love remote.

I actually don't mind spending some time. It gives me some good time to think about a lot of things, observe what's happening, etc.

I can easily move near to my office, but I chose to stay where I'm right not majorly because if this reason. I didn't mind travelling this much.

It takes 35 minutes to travel 26 KMs in the morning, and less ~50 minutes while coming back in the evening.

I absolutely love ORR

I guess u need to write a long post about it to convince urself. It’s how humans try to justify their own decisions. Anyway, it’s not about one or the other. Like introverts & extroverts exist. Everyone had a choice how they wanna be & ppl wuld like same choice here

TL;DR - I like working from office because, I enjoy it 😂

It's a long post because, I needed to include a lot of things which is relevant for me, as well address some other things.

It's can guess 4 reason you probably feel this way:

  1. No gf/wife/someone who curses you if you are not at home and rather enjoying with your teammates.
  2. You have a crush on a girl in your org/team and get time to talk with them.
  3. You are an extrovert and you NEED to talk to someone or get OUT of your house/room or you feel like you are claustrophobic.
  4. Your work is too hectic and you have to work continuously at home but at work you can (are socially forced to) take regular breaks between work sprints (breakfast, coffee, lunch, coffee, snack)

  1. Mine is a 10 person team, and 8/10 regularly come to office. Except me, all 7 of them are of the age 35-50
  2. I'm not an extrovert, but an ambivert
  3. My work is not hectic. I work at an organisation which is famous for its WLB. At time I may have to put in more hours, but genery, it's relatively easy going

I will answer that: A. Wfh also lets you meet new people given the liberty that you can work from literally anywhere. We have 28 states and 8 UT.

B. I dont know what you have been through that traffic doesn’t bother you.

C. Clearly you are an extrovert and god bless your teammates for keeping up with you.

D. What leadership says about learning in the office. Honestly, the chaiwala in Himanchal has more meaningful experiences to share.

E. Last but not least, we think office in metro city means freedom.
But freedom is just state of mind.

Work from office is good for people who doesn't have a life outside.

If anyone has good number of people with whom he can meet and hangout together, then definitely work from office is not good.

Meet new people everyday:- No office hires new people everyday. Why anyone would be so interested in office gossips and politcs every other day.

Work from home or anywhere: We can actually meet new people from different profession, different places do remote work from different location, enjoy nature, different cuisine etc

You have yourself mentioned that u live alone in service appartment so ya spending so many hours in traffic will be a plus for you and atleast having few people in office to spend the time.

But for many outside office life is much bigger.

It's true that my organization doesn't hire every day. But there's more than 4000 employees in India 🤞🏻

Also, I'm not against wfh. I'm fortunate enough to like wfo. Also, I'm not that alone. From my team mates to friends outside work, I've a ton of options do something

depends on a lot of factors like person to person and his/her situations, internet connection, mindset, support from family, family size, house space and n no of things.
anyone having favourable factors at home/ native town would want to work from home anyone having disadvantage in any of the reasons might have a compelling reason to work from office.

Also I would say someone starting their carriers or anyone less than 5 years of experience should opt for working from office as they dont have a habit/mindset/clarity of learning work dynamics.

That actually makes sense, I've around 2 years of experience only.

At home, the conditions are favourable for wfh, but I like to have my stakeholders around me.

You stay 50km away in a service apartment.

What's your salary? Do you work in HR? Which problems do you work on? Do you have a team that reports to you? Is your work planned in sprints?

I am very curious.

SwirlyRaccoon

Sorry for the confusion. It's 25+KM one way.

I'm not comfortable disclosing my salary although it's anonymous, but I would say it's good for someone with less than 2 YoE.

No, I don't work in HR 😂 I work majorly on tech capabilities for my organization. I don't have a team reporting to me. More than half of my work is planned during sprints, the remaining are relatively long term ones.
