How do people survive while unemployed for years?

This is a serious question. Sometimes I read comments from people saying how they have been unemployed for "x" years. How do they pay rent? Buy groceries? How is it possible to be unemployed for years and not be homeless? Maybe I'm naive from asking this question.

I’ve been unemployed since November 2023, I feel like I’ll never find a job in tech again.

To skip the long story I was fired out of nowhere by the company I was working for my supervisor never told me I was doing nothing wrong everybody played it off until I received a call saying they let me go I have 2 kids under 2 it’s been hard trying to upskill and study for to make myself more valuable and my spouse works idk what to do I feel like I’m useless and a waste of life.

Unemployed since May 2024

I am not getting shortlisted for SDE interviews. Getting an interview call is also rare for me. Referrals are also not working for me. No referral has brought any interviews. I have also utilized Naukri subscriptions, Foundit subscriptions, and LinkedIn Premium. I am also giving paid Topmate interviews. I am also improving my resume with the help of paid resume reviews I am preparing and applying for jobs every day.

Job Hunting Since Nov 22 (Still unemployed)

I am a frontend developer with 1.4 years of experience. I worked in a YC-backed startup where I led their product. I have given interviews at Simpl Pay, PhonePe and many small and mid-sized startups. For Simpl Pay and PhonePe, I failed the interviews and was disappointed in myself. In small and mid-sized startups there I answered 95% of their questions perfectly, yet I was still rejected. I have given 9 interviews to date and have been rejected in each of them. I would say 60% of them were interviews where I answered every question correctly and felt I should have been hired while 40% were ones where I failed to answer some questions and deserved the rejection. It has been 6-7 months that I am unemployed, learning React Native and TypeScript and going deeper into frontend technologies. I am not able to understand if this is only happening to me or if it is common in the current market. Any guidance or advice that could help me get a job quickly would be greatly appreciated. I feel well-prepared for interviews but any additional insights you have might be beneficial.

Unemployed since 3 months

I quit my last company in Dec 2023 due to some reasons. I was not aware the market would be this bad. Basically in a nutshell I have at least given interviews in 10-15 companies till now, cleared most of theirs all rounds, but for some reason or other they didn’t release an offer. some feedback includes, why do you want to join us with such less hike, you would leave us in few months. One said they are not able to get final sign off from their lord in US. And mostly others just stopped responding. ATM I don’t understand anything, emergency funds getting over, and realised all the network I made till now in my career and whom I helped are of no use. I know I wont get any clear advice here also, but just venting out. I am on the brink of just quitting everything of this corporate drama and start prepping for govt exam, or start a small biz in my town

When unemployed

Do you work (upskill) every day or take Sunday (any 1 or 2 days) break per week. What are your thoughts on this?
