How many hours do you actually work?

Yesterday I started work around 11.30 and spent about 2-3 hours in the morning & afternoon doing code reviews , tech discussions, meetings etc. and then spent most of the day chilling with my parents. (WFH) I felt a bit guilty about working so less (and there was some work to do) so I put in a 3 hour focused time to write some code/implement some requirements. Total of about 5-6 hours of actual time spent actually working. This has been about the average for me for a year now; this is how a typical work day usually looks like. At home I usually spend maybe 6-8 hours in front of the laptop at my desk out of which 5-6 hours would be actual time spent working. (It’s a LOT less at office, that’s a different story altogether) Is this too less or is this the norm for software engineers today? What does the number look like for you, how many hours do you spend in front of your laptop & how many hours do you actually work every day?

Measuring how many hours you work is like measuring how many lines of code you're committing. Focus on how much work you are getting done in a day. If A takes 4-5 hours to finish their work in a day & B takes 10-11, would you say that B is more productive than A? A shouldn't feel guilty because of B & B shouldn't think that A is 'slacking at work'.

Agreed; and in terms out output & productivity I am doing reasonably well compared to expectations & peers - however I know for a fact that I am putting in a lot less hours then I can, less hours compared to what I was putting in earlier on in my career - hence, I wanted to know what kind of experience others are having

@TechBro I'm not aware of your seniority and role at Uber, so my advice may be useless, but I would suggest learning something new or upskill in the extra free time you have. This might help you take more difficult tasks in the future & complete them faster.

Was* Was famous for that cause it was true Not anymore, not since last few years; Uber has been trying to mature as a company since Dara became CEO & IPO happened; since 2019 it’s been a good company to work in for a long time. (Recently though there’s some issues that’s cropped up; but nothing to do with bad WLB )

This is the norm. Usually, you would include meeting and other random things in work time but if you only count focused work then also it can usually be done for up to 3 to 4 hours. You can read about deep work. People with top tier attention span are able to pull off 4 or sometimes a bit more of intensely focused work. If you can pull off even 3 hours of deep work, it can be equivalent to 7, 8, 9 or even 10 hours of most other people who can't do deep work.

WFH made us realize how spending less amount of time can still make us meet the timeline. To talk about my schedule, some days I stretch for 12 hours, some other days, I work for only 3-4 hours. It’s quite disorganized.

Giving more than average 10 hours everyday for past 8 years in startups. Learnings were immense and earning decently atm. However, I am not really proud of it anymore. I feel like enjoying my evenings doing nothing. Probably, joining an MnC would help but then I don’t want to be part of politics. Not sure what should i do but just living one day at a time.
