Future for production support roles?

Hi guys, what are your views on production support roles? 1. What are the opportunities to learn and grow in such roles? 2.Can you consider someone in a production support role equivalent to a SDE if their work revolves around automating processes using scripts which involve using data structures to solve problems in Bash, PowerShell, Python, MySQL and Angular?
