Earning 2x of a Tier-1 MBA grad already. Should I still do an MBA?

I joined an MBA program while I was making close to the average salary of post MBA grads. Few things to remember: 1. Opportunity cost of a 2 year MBA is humongous. The PGP at IIMs will cost you a crore+. Imagine trying to get an ROI on it. 2. PGP at IIMs are filled with freshers and low work experience folks which naturally means there are very few senior roles on offer. So you may not find the right level after MBA. 3. It's best to restrict yourself to 1 year programs like ISB's PGP and IIM's PGPX. 4. Be really sure of what you want from the MBA. You can easily switch to SDM or product roles without MBA. Recommend giving that a shot if you are just tired of SDE

Yeah. Definitely go for it. MBA will make a hole in your pocket and then you will feel renenergise to earn it back.

Depends. MBA may not be helpful in short term, but might help you later in your career (after 20-25 YoE). If you have sizeable savings and want to do FIRE before 40, mba would be a bad fit. On the other hand, mba is a no brainer if you plan on working till 60 / or beyond

If money is your goal; then don’t. The moment you get Sr. staff & Principal you will making more than 3 Cr+, more than an average SVP makes in India. But if you like to take part in leadership where strategic decisions are made, then you need to speak the business lingo.

Just do executive mba if you absolutely have to

Bro I'm just 1.6 YoE and even I have been advised against MBA by many of senior friends I made during the short stint of mu career mainly due to opportunity cost. Apart from this, the exposure you get at IIMs is shit (ISB is still better). I'm telling you this after talking to A LOOOTTT of people. If you wanna do an MBA, do it from outside India or ISB (in case you don't wanna go outaide). At least that's what I have decided for myself. But yeah all these decisions I have made after consulting with a lot of people and lot of very knowledgeable, wealthy people. (Fortunately I had a lot of great colleagues at my first workplace which are almost like family now lol).

Just an observation : the comments here are steering more into economics of doing the course than what knowledge one can get in an MBA.

Do it. A senior role is virtually guaranteed.

Every company is headed by these MBA in various business role. If Now or in future you are looking to switch towards business, MBA would help. Though I don't believe MBA people should necessarily head buisness roles. But there is a industry bias.

I have the same situation man. Struggling with literally the same thing rn. High paying job, but lacking interest to a point that every day has become a pain to survive as an sde. In the end I decided not to go for it, and just figure things out with time, since going for an MBA just cause I hate software development doesn’t make sense. Plus its scary to think if after 2 years, I don’t crack a high paying job, and end up hating that as well, then its just gonna be wasted money and TIME. Instead I am hoping to figure things out as time goes by. Maybe I’ll get to know what I really want to do.

In a similar situation. MBA on the resume helps if you want to get into a less technical and more managerial role. Not mandatory, but it sure helps from a hiring manager perspective. The opportunity cost being too high, leaves you with 2 options. 1. PGPEM from IIMB 2. PGP from ISB PGPEM is my preference because it is weekend classes on Friday afternoon and Saturday. There's an international exchange as well, if you're interested. Takes effort to balance work etc, but definitely doable.

If you want to become a CTO but don’t have a tier 1 engineering degree from IITs (older ones) or BITS, go for a MBA. And if you want to do something else - consulting, product, sales, ops, marketing, strategy, MBA is your best bet. Money would eventually come around. Don’t let short term losses scare you into taking the plunge.

Yes any higher qualification is always good. When you will be at a stage of general manager/ VP and stuffs then this degree will definitely be a bonus point as far as further promotions are concerned.

If you want to make more money, then business would be a better idea. Since you already have the tech skills, you can add your management skills to work(as you think you can do a good job with it).

Your point of view note that much matters then company professionals who expect something special or can say better than what they have in their managerial team

If you are doing it just for the tag, then just do it online from a reputed platform. Also DBA and doctorate programs are gaining momentum.
