Wayfair Likely Doing a Mass Layoff Tomorrow

Rumor mill is fired up since a week and all meetings with senior leadership this week have been removed from calendars without any notice! Also noticed that several leaders are WFH today. Guessing that is to avoid nervous conversations and to engage in private meetings over phone calls to decide which heads they are going to chop off. The 🔔are going off! Prepare yourselves!

I discussed it with a friend, Wayfair is aggressively hiring and they want to shift 25% of their engineering in india by the end of this year. There is very little chance of impact to Indian engineers.

I have an interview there in December. I did well but mostly saw a lot of unprofessional managers particularly in hiring manager and system design round. For example the manager was trying to ask me what I would do if a colleague is under reforming and kept asking me for an instance where one of my colleagues was under performing. I avoided the question. This was just one of many unprofessional questions. I then received a reject verdict. Now I understand why

There were two managers in the design round. The irony is that one of the managers said he likes conducting this interview by allowing the candidate to drive it. And he kept interrupting me every few minutes I also found it strange that they were asking the same questions to everyone without any change.

Rumors of reorg at gojek

Heard from multiple people that with Patrick taking the position of CEO that there are rumors circulating about an upcoming reorg and cost-cutting measures, with a strong emphasis on achieving positive EBIDTA to satisfy investorss. Some redundant products within the GOTO is likely to be merged and some team shuffling to happen. It is uncertain how much of this information is accurate, and I can't imagine an impact this would have. Silent layoffs, numerous senior leaders leaving and many actively interviewing is just unsettling. Ideally, I would prefer to focus on my work and end the day peacefully, avoiding the stress of layoffs and excessive supervision. I hope that tomorrow's townhall meeting will not be awkward or gloomy.

The company is notoriously famous for doing silent layoffs in the name of semi-annual performance reviews. Given that by next month their peak season will get over, they have started with the homework of preparing lists for people to do layoffs.

dunzo laid off ~20-25% of it's workforce today, calling it that they overhired, pretty pre-planned. And coincidentally some dept. heads are on leave for the next few days, unavailable to answer their team. I wonder why these people even take up the leadership roles if they can't step forward to answer.

Silent layoffs upcoming 😔

I got to know a senior leadership member at a popular startup suggested to deliberately do poor appraisal for an employee so that she resigns herself. Bad times ahead with companies forcing employees to join back offices and planning silent layoffs. PS: By "forcing" I mean not leaving employees with much of an option other than to quit.
