What’s the worst advice you’ve got in your professional career?

I haven't change job in 17 years. I started here as a fresher and I am here still. Salary is bad but I can't blame the organization. Don't want to dwell on past (because I do it daily). I am Wintel Server Engineer for 11 years and did that is there to do. Then I was asked to do Infrastructure Management of our Network Security Devices and EDR Solutions. So my job helps the cybersecurity teams of my organization but I don't feel I am really doing cybersecurity. With this profile I do not get interviews calls. I have taken subscription of Acloudguru, tryhackme and plurasight to upskill myself . Have enrolled myself to SIEM training (arcsight and splunk) basically this training for freshers who want to get into SOC Analyst role. Now, I don't know what should I do ..I want to be in Defensive Security Operations type role but I need money soonest as well. I am thinking doing Security +, CEH and CySA certs ...studying is difficult...focusing is difficult. What should I do....please help.

Just wanted to know people's experiences who have made this switch or even just general things i or anyone should know. Apart from the obvious change in work, Is the salary structure the same? Etc. And just for context in my specific case I'm almost closing in on 4 years of experience in software development.

Background: I'm about to start my corporate journey and one of the advices I recieved was "Don't take things personally, and treat most feedback as a chance to improve and not resent!" What would you advice your younger self, about to step out in the corporate world? Drop some wisdom!

A lot of times I have seen people who want to make the big bucks make no effort be it interviewing, up skulking finding the right team, and most importantly finding the right manager. People just want to land any job and assume that they will magically by hook or crook be progressing in their career with significant high fixed salary. But you gotta remember one toxic co worker one bad manager one bad designer one bad stakeholder one bad peer review can decide whether you are getting a refresh grant a bump in base and eventually a promotion. First you need to figure this shit out, then comes the next step. Obviously, we can’t function with the same amount of energy all the time like in our 20s in our 30s and in our 40s like 30s, so you must prioritise learning how financial independence works and how to make wealth, I am not saying an unrealistic goal. But realistically how much do you want to grow your net worth considering inflation in order to say this is it and I can stop working for someone else. And I have heard many many times about people saying I will wait for this raise, I will wait for this project to finish, I will wait for this 6 months in order to take a break or a vacation. But remember the reality is that time will never come you have to make the time which means planning early not busting your wallet. And considering the layoffs and the correction in salaries, it’s high time you must learn and plan these things better in order to provide a better life for you and your family both parents and dependents. Stop chasing 100 different things focus on 5, do a few things really good, eventually get to what you’re looking for. Wanted to share this as I have heard some random discussions about making 25-50 crore in 10 years easily without any of this. Unfortunately it is not possible unless you luck out.

While pay/employer brand are generally important parameters for making the decision to decide your next org, please also consider the following: i) is the company absolutely clear about which team you would be working in: I have seen a lot of people hired recently who keep working on random things even upto their first 6 months ii) Is the team in which you would be working important for the company: Being a dev in the ordering team is very different from being a dev working on an internal tool that maybe 50 people in the organisation use iii) Does the company have a sound business model ( make money) These are additional parameters you should always keep in mind. Always have a threshold for each parameter. And if a company/offer is scoring low in any of these parameters it shall be making it up on the rest.
