MBA or conventional business

I have worked in startups for 6 years now(Product Manager role); and recently applied for 1-year MBA programs in UK. Got in Queen’s University, University of Liverpool, Birmingham and a few others. I resigned a few months ago because company was putting people on PIP instead of layoff and severance payments. I am not working at the moment. Eventually I did not go for MBA - thought it’s foolish to spend 30lakhs for a Masters Stamp on my portfolio. People generally to for MBA to move into another domain; and mostly product. I am thinking of a few conventional businesses now or a job overseas. I do not have a Tier 1/2 college degree. What would you have done?

The argument that any amount spent on education is a waste of money is pretty pointless. Education at a later stage opens up your avenue for networking. Sometimes the connections you make takes you a long way forward. Who knows you’d find your next business partner out there.

I agree with that. But the colleges I got were not top tier; thus I meant ‘waste of money’. For LSE, UCLA that may not be true. My problem is not with getting education, problem is getting education from yet another non-tier1/2 college. I have done my Bachelors from a Tier 3 college; and living in Bangalore to apply for jobs, resume shortlisting always has been a let down experience.

MBA is a useless degree for trying to build a conventional business. If you have approach, start getting permit for a gas agency or petrol pump in new developing area of tier 2 city, excellent payoff. The other good business is building a franchising thing and use Youtube for promotion. Possible business in skill development / education and food ans other services here.

Local restaurant whose dish you like and is unrecognized outside, learn to make it ay scale and build a chain around it. Good franchise marketing culture emerging on youtube.

I also think nobody has thought of the opportunity cost here. For an year of MBA - 30lakhs Cost of living - 20 lakhs I will have to work for 3.5 years post degree to cover this loan; and even if i find a business partner, getting a job would still be the first priority somehow.

Why you care about others? What you did was right for you . You can't get everything. But investing in education rarely harms anyone. You get knowledge, network, and a degree.

The issue is i am confused what’s right for me or not. The last org. I worked, it’s a large startup fintech which has recently got profitable; I feel brainwashed to a greater extent because of the toxic culture there. MBA was never on the charts for me. But other product managers were hired from IIMs while I was only working there post a Btech degree; I was often made to feel less of my credibility.

Many successful entrepreneurs like Flipkart brothers, zerodha founder, Myntra founder, Infosys founder, Mr ELON Musk(richest person on earth )didn't have a MBA degree so it's clear MBA is not a requisite to build a big business. So stop putting artificial constraints on yourself. People will always try to diminish you but you got back your logic with data and sense. You can still do MBA for learning experience and networking.
