Should I do MBA after IIT
Hi, I am working in an mnc as a software developer since 2 years after graduating from a top tier IIT. But I don’t see myself doing this in the next 5 years. Should I do an MBA from top tier IIM college? I know it will not be beneficial in short term but in long term is it a good idea? Anyone from similar backgrounds do share your experience.
IIT alumni here. MBA krk bolega, “I don’t see myself doing this in next five years”. Tell me what you want to do and then take your next step.
What’s the guarantee that you’ll like post MBA work. Find you passion and then try to stear to it.
Obviously it won’t be a random decision. But until I try to experience management or atleast get to know some basics, I wouldn’t be able to tell for sure. That’s exactly what I wanna ask how do I know whether MBA is a good fit for me.
Mgmt to bro current company mai bhi seekh jayega. Mine to managers role.
With MBA you’ll loose 2 years, lots of parents money, marriage will be delayed, could even loose handsome dowry.
Try to stick in tech and move towards mgmt.

@WanFerret Monetarily and career wise IIMs are not worth it after IIT. Your software experience wouldn't be considered during IIM placements. You definitely would be taking a pay cut. And it will set your career back atleast 2-3 more years.
IIMs were great in the 2000s and early 2010s, but the annual supply of grads has not seen a similar rise in demand from the Indian industry. Ergo, every year most IIM grads get into a progressively worse job market with lower bargaining power.
What do you suggest then if I want to get into management consulting and other finance related fields. Even if I work my way up I’ll have to start from scratch don’t you think? Wouldn’t IIM give me a headstart then? I also am planning to stay in India only so am not interested in foreign degrees that much.

Most management consulting/Finance placement numbers have been on the decline. It is gonna be a cruel unnecessary rat race followed by another rat race inside whatever MBB firm you have got into. Most MBB JCs move into industry depending on whatever industry is hiring after their 2yr stint.
I ain't saying people shudnt do it. But for you, being from a top tier IIT and in a well paying job, you stand to lose out a lot. You need to analyse if it is worth it.

@WanFerret talk to some IIM alumni to understand life during and after MBA. But most importantly find out why you want to do an MBA.
Is there anything I can study to know whether it will be a good fit for me?
Get the feeling that op is trying to check all boxes? Ask yourself if management consulting is really a goal worth pushing for and giving up your current trajectory.
Speak to ex consultants and get more clarity if it's the right fit for you. If you're convinced then go ahead. But explore all options thoroughly.

Hell no!
What drives you to an MBA? Is it because you are bored of your current role and don't see yourself in Software Development in a few years time? I would suggest that you introspect a bit and then make a decision on your career
I don’t have enough drive for MBA right now. But unless I am able to experience it how would I know it for sure. Is there any good course I could study to understand if the MBA life is for me?
