Any advice for a student who will be joining his first company?
Hey guys, So I'm a senior BTech CSE engineering student from a Tier 2 college in Karnataka and I will be interning at a Top MNC in Bangalore over the summer for 2 months. Any advice for me? As I will be entering the infamous corporate world as a new chapter in my life, I wanna know how the dynamics in corporate works and what I should prepare for. Thank you lads.

The degree of success at your job will not be far less dependent on your core skillset (coding/data analytics) but more on your ability to deal with people
- Learn which fights to fight, which not fight. Early on just be open to learn and refrain from pushing back too much (first learn the job, don’t do your manager’s job)
- Identify key power centres within a company (not necessarily CEO/COO/VPs) and work/learn from them on how to navigate the system
- Informal connections/ networks are far more established than formal connections, so invest in them (across levels)

Thank you very much for replying and great advice.
Regarding the informal relationships part.
I've been fascinated by this.
I want to make good long lasting connections with my peers. How do you suggest I approach that? Should I just hang around after work? Should I just engage in basic conversations? How exactly do I create the best lasting connections in a 2 month period?
Thanks

Just don't be obvious about wanting to make connections. People have been throwing around the word "networking" too liberally across sm these days, understand how your association helps the other professional.
In corporates it's more often than not a give & take relationship especially when you're skipping levels.

1. Soft skills >>>>> tech skills. You have already proven your worth and have got in. What matters now is the relationships you build with your manager, your mentor and your team. Make sure they're good and everyone likes you as a person more than as an engineer.
2. Having said that, be a good engineer as well. Ship stuff fast, ask a ton of questions, clarify requirements, have an immense amount of ownership of stuff you build, and keep your mngr updated about every little thing.
Thats all i guess? Most importantly, have fun while you're at it. Cheers, hope you get that return offer!

Thank you so much for the reply. I guess everyone is saying similar stuff. How exactly would u suggest I pursue these connections? As in, what's the process? Sorry if the question is a bit vague, it's so new to me haha
There is no process mate, just be you and just be fun :) people don't like cocky introvert freshers. Talk to them regarding stuff that's not work, go out for drinks, etc.

Keeping an attitude of knowing everything kinda hurts seniors ego. It shows you are trying to lower them down. Noone wants to feel insecure. Hope that helps!
Do your work well. Don't fight with people. Talk in a decent and calm manner. Be open to new things. Don't become a yes man.
For making long lasting connections be your genuine self, don't become someone else.

I understand but to isn't that a cliche? We all put on a mask and play a role in the world. We cannot be our genuine self all the time right? Especially in politics right?
Think IDIL is trying to say you should be able to identify which situations/people are political like and which are genuine, open conversations.
In any case, don't overthink these things, you just got through college and a lot of the social skills that helped you there will be of use here too.

Learn to please the people, then do your job. If you have a very firm personality, you already made it 😂
Also degree doesn't matter, upskill in your own time to be able to step in when even your seniors may not, that's how you rank up in corporate.
