Bangladesh Court Orders Probe in Murder Case Against Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina

- A court in Dhaka has opened a murder investigation into former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six top figures in her administration over the police killing of a man during civil unrest last month. - The case was accepted after private citizen Amir Hamza filed a legal suit over the killing of grocer Abu Saeed, who was shot on July 19 during protests in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka. - Hamza, not related to Saeed, approached the court voluntarily because the family lacked the finances to file the case, blaming Hasina for the police firing. - The court also named former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, and four top police officers who have since vacated their posts. - This is the first case filed against Hasina following weeks of unrest that killed more than 300 people, with her government accused of widespread human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings.
