Today, I feel sad. We truly lost somebody who exemplified doing 'good' along with doing 'business'.

I'd recently read the book ‘The Story of Tata’ and had learnt the good they have done, which is always difficult when you're a capitalist. But Tata truly is built different, and Ratan Tata took the torch so far ahead.

I started out career at TCS like many here, so that’s the most obvious way I was benefitted from what they have made. It was a start, and a start is what one often needs.

But beyond it: there are many things

1. He took Tata from $6Bn in revenue to $100Bn in revenue under his reign

2. ⁠Acquired brands like Tetley, JLR which are honestly a big deal for an Indian company 

3. ⁠Nano, which failed, was one of his noble pet projects. It showed his thought process.

4. ⁠Support to startups: literally every founder is putting up stories of their interactions with him, how ever present was he

All while donating 60% of profits to social causes via Tata Trusts (that’s a function of his ancestors and how they set the company)

We’ve lost a legend. We’ve lost an example in positive business building.

I hope we remember and learn from Ratan Tata for long. ♥️

Absolutely echo what you have written 
 It was his calling to be an industrialist and billionaire (because of his family). But so many of his choices reflected a noble intent. 
  
 And that’s all it takes. Ambani Adani etc will never see the love we’re seeing outpouring for Tata. 
  
 And I hope that becomes an example for more business leaders.

Personally, Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.

The concept of Antifragility, where systems and individuals not only withstand chaos but actually benefit from it, had reshaped my perspective on risk, resilience, and adaptability. It is extremely complementary to the writings of Marcus Aurelius but differing in key ways.

While both Antifragility and Stoicism encourage resilience in the face of adversity, they approach it differently. Stoicism emphasizes inner calm and acceptance of what cannot be changed, while Antifragility encourages actively seeking out challenges and volatility to grow stronger. 

For me, the blend of these philosophies provides a more holistic approach to navigating life's uncertainties, combining the wisdom of the ancient Stoics with a proactive stance toward embracing chaos and harnessing it for personal growth.

- Almost 40,000 people were found dead alone in their homes in Japan during the first half of 2024
- Of these, nearly 4,000 were discovered more than a month after death, with 130 bodies going unnoticed for a year.
- Japan, which has the world's oldest population, is grappling with a growing issue of elderly citizens living and dying alone.
- 70% of the deceased were aged 65 and above, with the largest group being those aged 85 and older.
- The findings will be presented to a government group addressing unattended deaths, as Japan continues to struggle with its ageing and declining population.

the government focused on infrastructure related expenses rather than direct benefit transfer.

What do you think we are doing right as a country?

Honestly, government ain't doing a lot but it's people who r hustling n boosting GDP. Govt. is just an enabler. 
  
 1. Fpi+fdi+remittances+dollar sale by RBI is reason behind inr stability. 
  
 2. Due to festival demand we saw a zoom in manufacturing, real estate and mining which resulted in 7.8% q2 growth 📈. 
  
 3. Remove top 5cr tax paying citizens n nation will be like a sub saharan Africa 🌍 nation 
  
 4. Infrastructure boost by government causes cyclical effect in economy. Dbt or ubi ain't a solution in 1500M nation. It's suitable for small EU nations with 5-10M population. 
  
 5. I believe government including states should spend on education, skill development n health as much as possible. Currently we spend 20% on subsidy n less than 2% on education or health. It's happening since 1947. 
  
 We need to build capacity n not work less but paid bots. 
  
 We should be a knowledge economy not a labour economy.

There’s never been a better time to be a DINK, according to Business Insider.

In our death beds it's not the bank balance that would give us joy but the core memories that we made makes us feel we lived a great life. At the end that's important 
  
 If you are compensating for your choice of not having kids through other core memories like traveling or other experiences then go for it. Optimising not having kids only for saving money is a dangerous thing. As I get older I realise that joy comes from giving and not from accumulation.

I started my career as a humble analyst in a tech company, worked my way into finance and venture capital and eventually am heading to a top tier bschool in USA, where I will be paying what it costs to go to an ISB/IIM yearly.

We have the Warikoos, and countless others breaking down personal finance and urging people to save. I have mostly done the opposite - i.e., spend liberally but not be profligate. Here’s my view. 

We are a poor country. If you find yourself in a place with the resources to spend more than the average person you’ve grown up around, please do! Spend on what makes you happy, pushes you, drives you, and allows you to step change your life. Security can be achieved with a good insurance plan and decent emergency funds. Beyond that, please spend on experiences that make you a better person, give you access to better people and enrich your life. Eventually time is the most finite commodity we’ll have. We have 1000s of podcasts on savings, mutual funds, ETFs etc. Does anyone talk about spending effectively to enrich your experience? No. 

I am pointing to a larger theme of a scarcity mindset that indians have, because we have grown up in a low-middle income country. It’s where we come from, but that doesn’t mean we cannot experience abundance. Life is short, don’t listen to people making money off you watching their personal finance videos.
