Does buying a car make sense? Location: Delhi NCR

I have just shifted from Bengaluru to Gurgaon for a new opportunity. Apart from all the cultural differences, the biggest thing I have noticed in Delhi-NCR is the huge presence of 4 wheelers on roads.

  1. Is a car really that needed in Delhi (consider the Summers and Winters) or is it just a status symbol here?
  2. If a car purchase does make sense, do you recommend a new/used car? My budget is INR 6L

PS:

  1. My office is 3kms one way from residence.
  2. I only have 2 members in my family (my wife and I).
  3. I already have a 400CC bike with me.
  4. I may end up driving on weekends to the hills.

To be honest, if your office is 3km away and there's a bicyle path in bw your house and office use that instead of a motorcycle on gurgaon roads. Or just take an auto. Soon it'll be so hot that the bike won't make any sense; having said that the car may be convenient but you can make do without it.

A bicycle in delhi is an invitation for death.
Also, if an unruly driver spares your life, you'll be killed by weather 🥵

Delhi, yes. Some areas of gurgaon have a bicycle path toh they're okay. But you're right, its still a hassle.

Getting a car in Delhi-NCR is highly dependent on you as a person tbh.

You can make do without one. Uber and Ola works well as compared to Bangalore where even a 30s rain leads to no cab being available. In Delhi, you won’t face that problem.

Getting a car, is a great idea if you plan on travelling to nearby destinations💡

6 lacs is a tight budget. You could get a second hand car tbh. However, I would recommend that get a compact SUV over a Hatchback or a Sedan whenever possible. Maruti Brezza, Nissan Kiger, Tata Nexon, something like these.

Stick to your bike. Apart from your office being close, 6L in my opinion is on the lower side to get a car. Cabs should suffice your needs. Gurgaon also has BluSmart, so you can use it when you want your ride to be 100% on time.

If you and your wife enjoy driving and visiting near buy places, you can always get a Zoomcar/Revv.

I will recommend to just use bike. 3kms is not a long distance plus you have a 400cc bike already

A car is definitely needed throughout the year. Summers are harsh, in a few weeks it would be touching 45/50 degrees. Winters are harsh too, temperature goes down to 1/2 degrees most of the time and average is 6/8 degrees. This is apart from the usual 'looking down on people riding a bike - you can ride one out of passion but for your trips to the mall (even your Cyberhub) or restaurants, a car would be a better option. Would suggest buying a second hand car if your budget is 6L - a decent Baleno/i20/Brezza/City/Verna/Ciaz could be some nice options.
