Between 2020 and 2022, investors pumped billions of dollars into startups whose founders and leaders offered up the mythical “hypergrowth” narrative. Those startups, in turn, pumped money to hire and grow a layer of mid-level and senior-level executives whose job was to deliver on that hypergrowth narrative.

And salaries went through the roof. Hikes of 50% and above were par for the course.

Cut to the present.

If overvalued startups are widely recognised as a problem, can overvalued employees escape the same fate?

A CEO of a prominent company estimates that “in product and tech, 20-30% are in this category”.

 Who exactly is recognising overvalued startups as a problem? Most are still trying to run the grift and were only hampered by interest rates lowering their runway. You can see how many are opening AI startups that have nothing to do with AI whatsoever, not to mention the number of Crypto / Web3 companies in our country. 
  
 Executive pay has always been the problem, take a look at any graph showing the skyrocketing ratio of Executive:Employee salary ratio, and for terrible decision making and management as a trend.

Know a cousin who is a founder. Tells me with experience that VCs in India only operate in FOMO. Unless you tell them another VC is looking to invest in you, they will NEVER invest in you. 

They need fomo to operate 

Only exception is ex CXO founders (high profile), where they know they'll get funded so it's fastest fingers first!!

Hey everyone. 

Thought I could do an AMA. A bit about me - have 4 years of work experience and graduated from a non engineering college. Was at a startup before (from Series B to Series D) before becoming a VC

Personally look at consumer and B2B investments here 

Happy to answer any questions around life as a junior VC, startup ecosystem, career growth etc.

This is the biggest problem with VC ecosystem 4 yoe kids taking calls on experienced, hardworking founders. Dude first learn the game then invest , judge people playing the game. VCs know nothing about how to run startups. Unless they have been entrepreneurs themselves. IMO It's a colossal waste of talent to become a VC for young PPL.

Let's not rant over filpkart or others as tech startups. They are Tech enabled. Let's share out some tech startups registered on Indian soil with over 100 million dollar revenue. And discuss, why are you not creating one (if you have a vision and figured problem-solution-market)?

Eg: China in its developing time had many. Phone companies, circuits companies, gadgets companies, LED TV companies, semiconductors, agritech machines, plane manufacturing companies. 

Tik tok was a simple idea, literally most of you could have built the tech, couldn't you? Then, still why weren't we able to carry such big vision and execution. India received funds very well to replicate tiktok, yet they failed in execution and differentiation.

I struggle to accept a few thoughts;

1) We are less disciplined, less dedicated, and less visionary compared to the general population of China.

2) Maybe we are more western than the western itself. We adopted and copied developed nations present and skipped their past hardwork and dedication.

3) We have grown too practical and not ready to hear impractical ideas.

As a business graduate, it's often humbling to see the tech salaries based on my YOE (4-7 bracket) with the people at the top end earning 50-60+ lpa. (Fixed)

Assuming i want to optimise for Money - What can I do as a business graduate to do well similar to tech folks?

Hi all,
I graduated from IIT Delhi and have been working at well established startup since. 
So for a while I have been wondering why we don't have any deep tech startups doing innovation. Don't get me wrong, there are startups doing innovations but not the kind of innovation which we would call industry shattering or taking the level up a notch. Most of these innovations are just integrating what others are doing in an aggregated platform. I again wondered this today when I saw cognition launching Devin the AI software engineer. They have a pretty small yet highly talented team. 
We in India too have highly intelligent folks educating themselves in CS, why don't we have this mindset (even I don't have this mindset). 
Is it about the difference in culture or a sense of security that folks in the US have that helps them be free from an economic point of view and try innovative things ?

Why don't we have deep tech ?

Sharing frustrations with starting up a business. In my career I have raised over $30m over multiple rounds.

Co-founders in non-business roles get pushed out by politics. Sharing control with co-founders is messy, inconvenient, time consuming. Money lets you hire people who have to answer to you.

If you are not the main ‘Business person’ in a startup high chance you are disposable, no matter what skills you have. And it sucks to spend so much effort only to get bullied out and left with nothing.

Some investors will follow you on social media, if your business is not growing QoQ don’t post anything on social media that implies you are not working every weekend. They will ask why you are not working.

 If you are CEO, be ready for every random person to tell you how to run your business. Not in a ‘friendly advice’ kind of way, if you are the CEO you have a target on your back.

 Investors don’t know about your industry or have very dated knowledge. Some will just say random tips like ‘try web3’ or ‘try SaaS’ and blame you for following their advice when it fails.

 Your progress is measured against fraud companies who fake numbers, or the 1 in thousands who succeed. Get made to feel like you are failing to live up to super high expectations constantly.

 Employees work half your hours, off sick usuall one day a week, deliver next to nothing and expect 20% hikes every year because that’s what their friends make, or they read some dumb startup hires freshers at 20LPA. 

Smooth talking people with the same idea as you, no traction, never shipped a product in life, will raise a huge seed round due to 'pedigree' and spend it all on self promotion. You will always be compared to these clowns who find ways to lecture others while building nothing of value.

Dark side of starting up.

 This has become just more prevalent over time. Confidently advice learnings from startups that are faking GMV or PMF metrics :)

What problems would Indian and Global startups be solving in the next decade, or they would be just throwing random yearly new buzz words and as usual VCs would be having orgasms on these buzz words.

I mean real problems.
