Gay and want to move abroad as a product designer. How can I do it?

I don't think I have a future in India. In about 2 years, proposals for marriage will start coming for me and family members will start harassing me for it. Also, would like to find a partner (which is quite impossible here). I am a product designer and want to move out of this country as soon as the job market is stable.

How can I move to US/Western Europe apart from doing masters as a product designer? Do companies hire product designers from other countries? Or is it more easy as engineer?

Please don't troll here, I am already depressed all the time and can't handle it more

  1. Make a list of queer friendly countries that have decent economies. They are a handful as it is.
  2. Start identifying companies that sponsor in these countries.
  3. Simultaneously start figuring out the countries’ skill shortage lists. For example: UK is hiring product designers extensively. You will find that here - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/skilled-worker-visa-shortage-occupations/skilled-worker-visa-shortage-occupations
  4. Recreate your CV based on the relevant roles in these countries. Start applying to relevant companies accordingly.

If you are open to going on a student visa then start identifying a good university for you and also start planning your finances accordingly.

Please don’t:

  1. Get into a country that’s not queer friendly (will depress you further)
  2. Get random consultants like YAXIS (I have made that mistake, doesn’t work)
  3. Don’t rush

Hey there… I too identify as queer and i understand the angst that you are going through. I work as a hybrid UX researcher and developer. As many people pointed out, start building a portfolio that can highlight not just design skills but also UX research skills. I would also recommend learning AI. I guess a future where a great product designer can generate code isn’t too far away.

On a personal note, really evaluate why you are making this move. Moving abroad only temporarily avoids the problem. Whether you move or stay, make friends from the community. A chosen family can bring safety and give you the courage to face a lot of the challenges life will throw your way.

@RightSwath sorry if it is personal, but what are your future plans?

I’m 35. I chose to settle in Bangalore as i wanted to be with my parents when they get older. I’m out to my immediate family and friends and have been lucky to have their unconditional love and support.

Let me tell you my experience. After 30, the annoying relatives gave up and found other victims. Since i don’t have children, my quality of life is better than straight peers. I have a handful of friends that are always there for me through highs and lows. Overall 30s have been better than the storms of 20s so far… 😀

  1. Identify universities in Europe that have scholarships for masters in design. There are quite a few.
  2. Build your portfolio and apply.
  3. You will need to pay only for the cost of living there.
  4. Learn the local language, Get a degree from that country and get a job there.
  5. Chill!!

*writing the above as a witness to someone who has done it.

Want to move abroad

Hey,

I am working as an IT project manager and currently serving the notice period. Due to some personal/family issues, it’s becoming very difficult for me to stay here anymore.

I want to apply for companies outside India.

Need some...
