If I am asked about my current salary, how can I avoid it / decline sharing it? Won't it be looked at negatively?

2. Ask that much, don't let imposter syndrome get better of you (I am guilty of this)
3. Do not share your current salary. If you are not desperately looking for a job, put your foot down. Give them an expectation (point 1)
4. Expected range - you want the higher number, HR sees the lower number
5. Don't over-follow up - I have had people reach out on multiple platforms within 24 hours of applying. Give a week's time.
6. Clean up your resume, no spelling mistakes. I have seen some very beautiful resumes *chumeshwari*
7. Sometimes, the recruiter doesn’t have all the answers; they are also not getting updates from teams. Please be patient

So recently I interviewed in many companies including google, Microsoft, Amazon I have seen common pattern that HR not being transparent with candidates. They keep hanging candidates in between and not reply to text, email, messages, calls. Even if candidate is rejected why can’t they email or call to give feedback. Is this job really hard ?

l attended an interview today and told my expectation is 24 LPA, but they said for my skills, they were expecting to give around 26 to 30 LPA.

Now they've asked me to think about the proper CTC and give it to them. I don't want to ask for 30 LPA either.

I’m dumbfounded when the best piece of advice I hear is that its a numbers game and probability is supreme.
There’s got to be a strategy that one applies to shortlist from the ocean of offers out there.

- applying in the same domain as your current company?
- platform or regions where recruiters are more active?
- directly talking to freelance HMs and doing a deal?

If no hack, just share what worked for you? And how are you optimising the job searching?

1. Accept that it's a numbers game. Especially in this market  
 2. Embrace that there may be a super stupid person on the other side . E.G - My CV was rejected at a big Web3  startup, but I persisted : went through a reference spoke to HR and showed her how the CV is a 90%+ Match. She ended up fixing an interview. What if I didn't have a referral? Jata na 
 3. There is only one hack - get that CV in front of the hiring managers face : through referrals, through problem solution one pagers that I've DM'd directly to founders or hiring managers, consistently applying to the widest net, getting friendly and maintaining good relations with head hunters: I've helped so many head hunters with their other mandates unrelated to me, just for the sake of it. No expectations.  
  
 DESPITE throwing such a wide net, it still is roughly taking me 9-10 months for my next gig. Sure I'm looking at leadership mandates and woh roles by default halway mein nahi khatam hote.  
  
 But play the numbers smartly is the only way. Send a 100 tries out (but customized and personalized not spam) and tab hi kaam karega.

How did you tackle being laid off?

Keep looking around, apply and eventually you're bound to get a good job I promise you. Just treat it as a numbers game. Ask your parents help with the credit card bills if you don't have enough corpus, there is no shame in that. You can give the money back to them when you're in a better position. 
  
 You're a nice person from what I know of you in this platform, you got this sis! Ending it all is not a good option for the people who care about you, and you're probably gonna look back later and smile and be glad for making it through

But being on the other side of recruiting with all the power and influence of the corporate hierarchy, they seem to be out of touch.

Current reality: Firms put candidates on hold for months. HRs hardly reply to follow-ups. Processes with assignments that is free Labour in disguise. Asymmetry in salary negotiation (Companies asking for salary slips without telling us their budget/range).

Candidates are already on uneven field. SG and svs suggesting us to play it with integrity is bordering on their hypocrisy. 

If you like a candidate and he has multiple offers, There's a reason he has multiple offers. Either Pay up or shut up!

Context: 10.5 YOE, Marketing lead. I've been looking for a switch since September last year. I'd seen signs of maybe my role or the company itself folding very early and knew 'twas time to bolt. But it's not that easy. Back then - 1 year in a startup meant hey not bad, people still spoke to you and considered your profile. These days, they treat you like Ebola if you've not had your ass stuck in the same place for 3-5 years. 

Anyway, so the majority of my time searching for jobs was the shitty Easy Apply or IIMJOBS premium account route. Suprise suprise. It doesn't work. But hey I was still employed and not nearly as motivated as someone who's unemployed. 

Cut to layoffs: Got laid off with my whole team and a huge chunk of other leaders. My first layoff, felt hilariously like the last day of school. To the org's credit they gave us 3 month severance, leave encashments and extra months for those who'd been there for 2 years+. In hindsight hearing the horror stories of 2k severance from Byju's. I'm grateful for the nice golden parachute I got. I'll be honest, it contributed heavily to my mental stability. I had time, I had leverage, I didn't have to run for the first shitty opportunity that came my way. 

The How I did it (why you struggled through the above stream of consciousness) 

- Wrote to 159 founders with one pagers to 35 of them with ideas on how i'd lead their marketing function. 5 replies. 3 interviews. 2 offers - didn't take em cuz they were super early stage or diff cities. This is immediately in month 1 so I've already started feeling icky about not getting great brands to have in my set. 
- Easy Applied to 768 (I ran a Gmail search, this is a real number) jobs. 99% no responses or you've been rejected. 
-Kept changing one letter on my Naukri.com profile, got me 6 calls, 3 interviews and 1 conversion

 - Add HRs and hiring managers on LinkedIn, send them free ideas and strategies. Its ok if they steal them it meant they were great. One of them will refer you, remember you or hire you. 
 - Have a CV and a summary (half a page) that gets people excited about wanting to read the CV. Only areas of expertise and bullet points for results  
 - Don't put the OpentoWork filter on your LinkedIn DP. Its radioactive. I know people actively avoid those profiles. But make sure to keep open to work beacon on for recruiters. It pushes you ahead  
 - Dont post low effort i need a job because im laid off, i dont have money, copy pasted by millions on Linkedin. If you're gonna publically ask for a job, make sure that post has enuff of your skillset screaming for a potential hirer to want to explore more. Else you'll get velle gadhe typing CFBR 
 - Dont be anal or choosy about interviewing, i literally gave 35-50 in 3 months that culminated in 4 offers. Each one taught me something, heck ive spoken to startups with 7 peeps in it  
 - The only one that can negotiate CTC is the one that can walk away. When the offer i wanted finally came, my fixed went down a tad, but variable increased. The role was worth it so i didnt bother negotiating. Places i wasnt excited about - oh i quoted 30% hikes and got it at one place :p

So, I finally landed an offer with a product company as an SDE after months of struggle as a fresher. 

I hail from a circuital branch of the old IITs. Campus placements were difficult this year, so while I did interview at some good product companies (Microsoft, Amex, etc.), luck didn't favour me and I had tsettle up with a trading role with a low pay. (Other story why I decided to apply here in the first place)

Most of the news articles floating around fucked up placements at IITs are in fact true and I decided to try my hands at off-campus placements only to realise how difficult it is to get even your profile noticed (yes, even with a tier-1 college). 

So this is what I did which I believe can help freshers land a job in this difficult market:

1) Simply applying on LinkedIn esp. via easy apply won't work. There's literally thousands of applicants within a day for a job posting. So try to stand out among the crowd. 

2) Draft an excellent resume. Add things that you believe you can explain to the interviewer (doesn't matter if you've worked a lot on it, the interview is just an hour of you trying to make the interviewer believe the guy knows his stuff).

3) Know your strengths- are you good at DSA or are you good at dev. Startups would demand dev skills majorly, product companies would require DSA knowledge.

4) Start reaching out to people - very senior level people, HRs, Hiring Managers, people directly in touch with Hiring Managers, etc. Dm them on LinkedIn, cold email, and keep following up. In the case of early stage startups, directly reach out to the CTO/CEO. Sometimes, the jobs just don't get posted publicly. 

5) Don't lose hope. I've had days when I used to get a headache thinking of the future and days when I had multiple interviews on the same day. The market is just tough, you're good enough and things might take time, but you'll definitely make it through. 

I got interviews at a couple of HFTs, and a few good product companies and got an offer.

Finally landed an offer

I have given interviews and cleared them.
I got a call from HR asking for payslips and another offer details.

They said they will get back with offer.

How to go about here? If they come with a lower offer than what i asked, how much liberty i have to ask further.
Does HR will come with 2-3 various levels of offer and then try to negotiate with me.

Any help or insights would be helpful in how HR comes with offer details.
My interviews were pretty good and i think they like me.

How does salary negotiation before offer work

Don't share payslips yet if possible. Do it after finalising your offer details. 
  
 What information have you shared? Current compensation? Expected range? Do you have any other offers in hand? 
  
 The game that follows now is that of leverage of information vs offer expiry timelines. 
  
 They will share an offer. You can call it "interesting" but don't share more details on if you like it or not - you need to "think more" before you can share your opinion. Say that you need to discuss it with your well-wishers and also evaluate compared to other opportunities. 
  
 Get back to them on email and call the offer "strong" (if it is really good) or "interesting" (for all other cases). Suggest some improvements to the offer that would make it more compelling for you. Don't guarantee that you will accept the offer if these things are provided (unless it's your last day till offer expiry). Keep negotiating with everyone that is interesting and keep dropping the non-interesting ones. 
  
 Also, don't call the negotiation discussions a "negotiation" - that word sounds negative. Call it "discussing offer details" or something. 
  
 FYI: All of these tips are from the highly popular negotiation blog posts by Haseeb. They've worked well for me.

I am seeing a lot of layoff related posts everywhere from news articles to LinkedIn.. Is the Job market really that bad now? Or just the media is projecting that way? 

If it's really bad, which department you think is the most affected? How's layoffs specifically in India? Or is it layoffs in US but more hiring in India due to cost cutting? 

Are layoffs in technology/engineering dept as in for developers or some other departments? Your thoughts please..

It is really bad right now 
 1. Layoffs in many of the companies, irrespective of whether they're a startup or a big MnC. 
 2. Almost everyone I know of wants to switch, because of no/less appraisals from last 2 years 
 3. Bad work life balance - people thinks switching might help 
 4. Too much competition for any open position. Because of too much supply, companies are low-balling and people would accept the offer.  
  
 Recruiters ghosting is too common. Even if you've killed in your interviews and recruiters get someone who's ready to join on less pay, they'll simply ghost you.
