Government: You owe us money. It's called taxes. Me: How much do I owe? Gov't: You have to figure that out. Me: I just pay what I want? Gov't: Oh, no we know exactly how much you owe. But you have to guess that number too. Me: What if I get it wrong? Gov't: You go to prison !

It is not. You get the exact figure that you have to pay or will be reimbursed to you during ITR filing

I'm working in Finance sector since past 2 years and I haven't seen anything as mind numbing as tax calculations.
My friend in USA on the other hand tells it's even worse there with most of the processes being on-paper and/or via private players.
