My boss is likely moonlighting
I work at a startup. And It’s super funny but I think my boss is moonlighting. Here are the facts: - he’s hardly focused - he’s hardly trying to expand her role at work - he’s regularly on external calls taken secretly - he doesn’t care to understand what’s going on in other parts of our company

Why is moonlighting unethical? Let’s keep legality aside for a minute although it is not illegal.
Your senior leaders are directors at multiple companies.
CEO of startups like Lenskart, shadi etc are sitting on TV for personal investments which they will make money of and spending hours in shooting. Those same CEOs layoff as per their whims and fancies.
But when a lowly employee with a meagre salary tries to increase his/her earning potential, this crab mentality kicks in and it becomes unethical.
A person can be too good to handle both(or more) jobs superbly. However, if there are performance issues, you deal with that as an employer. It’s not like people working on a single job don’t underperform.
Also, there are 24 hours in a day and I am “supposed “ to work for 8 hours. Mathematically, a person can work 3 jobs in a day (and try to sleep at work).
We all rooted for Will Smith in the “Pursuit of Happiness “.

Topmate pe advice kar ra hoga manager ;-))
If a person works at 2 companies that is unethical but if the same person works at a company and works on separate projects from upwork that is freelancing and that is also ethical.
Most of the Doctors ,Lawyers & CA in India serve at different hospitals & different firms but neither government or these institutions called them as moonlighting but when it comes to engineering jobs every one start shouting they call it as trade secrets breach but when for example Infosys is having same domain client like Morgan Stanley & Goldman sachs then it doesn’t breach the law only engineer’s are paid less and they can’t even build their house they remain tenets through out their life and when their children’s are getting married at the same time they are fired because they are not productive but if you see in other professions more the experience better the doctor , CA, Lawyers….

What he does between 5pm and 1am is none of your business
It's totally unethical and breach of contract. Let's not normalise this behavior. Complaint about him
Nothing wrong with making an effort to earn more. Why such stupid contracts exist that stops you from earning more?
Your company won’t hesitate before laying your ass off when the time comes. Stop being a moral police.
Then be a free lancer and work in any number of company. You are lying and cheating the company who is hiring you full time. Employee like this give bad name to India. Where every one say Indian techie are totally unethical and not professional

He or her?. If it is a her.. then probably not moonlighting. She is probably working to look busy at home, maybe in front of her inlaws.
He/she is smart, you should learn something from him/her. (And basic English as well)
I hope you stay loyal to your company and then company lays you off so that some sense is knocked into your stupid ass brain.
You should do it too. The company leaders can invest in multiple companies, join multiple boards and then its not illegal. When you do it becomes a problem.
To hell with such rules. Your boss is doing the right thing
If it ever comes to layoff, he will have a good fallback. Good planning i would say.

I have different thoughts
I used to work at a startup and then I also took up freelance woek on the side made some good money.
Fast forward startup ran out of money they cut my salary by 50% for many months and then told me they couldn't pay it anymore. If I did not have that side income I would be jobless if I trusted the startup. So moonlighting helped me personally. Always always have a side income in this day and age. Companies don't think twice before laying off loyal employees who are we to them?
I used to work at Grapevine's most hated edtech company. My manager was like "if you wanna do some freelancing go for it" and this was in 2022 when the company was doing so well😂
Pro tip: Tell him to give you a high rating else you will rat his ass out.
