My company has an unlimited leave policy. Also the company recently laid off my coworker for taking too many leaves. What's going on here ?
The “unlimited” leave policy does not mean you can go on leave for an unlimited duration, no? It’s obvious there should be a reasonable balance.
It doesn’t help that the unlimited leave policy saw a majority of the folks take lesser leaves. When you have a fixed set of leaves and lapsing, people end up taking leaves just because the count is there.
And another reason is that you get encashment for remaining leaves when you’re laid off or when you quit. With unlimited leaves, the company saves this cost.
It’s criminal to think that any company would make policies that favour their employees. All policies favour employers at all times 😊

Unlimited leaves is only in name. If work gets affected you will too
That means you should use those unlimited leaves to prep for interview.
Tbh I would take every Friday or every other Friday off if I had this.

I'd rather have the fixed leaves tbh, I used to save up those and used to buy something frivolous that I wouldn't have even thought normally from the encashment, unlimited sounds good on paper but your manager will frown if you actually take advantage of it whereas with fixed leaves it's a given they will take so managers don't grumble as much

Unlimited leaves is a scam to make employees guilty of taking leaves and also save leave encashment money.
If you have pending leaves you will take leave with unlimited leaves you will feel bad for taking leaves.
Win win for employer.

Can't the employer just choose not to allow for leave encashment?

Should we read the terms and conditions all over again?
This is same as flexible working hours. It doesn’t mean you can work anytime you want. It means I will make you work anytime I want
Unlimited leaves is just a cop out from toxic founders
In reality you end up taking much lesser than the standard 21-23 leaves and that’s the purpose
Heard of navi ? They also have unlimited leaves policy.
However in practice the company is actually a jail.
It takes ceos approval To take wfh or leave more than 5 years.
Needless to say no-one actually dares to reach out to him.
Win win for the company !!!
5years ka leave who is gonna take???? Is that even a thing? Like i apply leave for 5yrs next and get paid without work???

I just took 9.5 leave from Jan to May. And my manager lost it
If I remember correctly, employees at companies with unlimited leaves take less leaves than companies with a fixed number of leaves because employees are not sure what an appropriate number of leaves to take is.
So unlimited leaves is not a benefit to employees.
Unlimited leaves policy comes with an unsaid rule which is ‘Leaves are Subject to approval’
Yup work comes first. All of these are good perks but to be exercised carefully. With great power, comes great responsibility.
Unlimited leaves is a scam in India. So many colleagues love job so much that they dont take leaves at all and you can't use them so much because it'll look bad. Fixed leaves are so much better. Companies do it deliberately

So average leaves taken by employees in my company with unlimited leave policy is 9 days 🫠😭
Even Unlimited leave policy is in favor employer only as during resign or termination they don't have to consider those days for payment. it's huge money saved by big companies during recent layoffs. Some stupid employees thinks it favors them...

I am taking an 18 day vacation no questions asked
Then probably you will be on HR's radar even if you just take the same number of leaves that we normally get in companies with limited leaves,🙃
How many leaves did he actually take any idea?

Probably a week or two more than the company average, also he had a good KPI rating, so I guess they just had to find a reason to lay off. Not adhering to hybrid working models might also become a reason.
