Online challenge for google interview

I have applied couple of times in Google which is kind of cloud engineer/sre role and not SE. Both the times I got online challenge as a first step and as usual it had basic linux, sql, data structures and coding question. I understand linux, sql questions part but how coding, data structure is relevant for that role? Is this only way to get into Google’s interview process or is there any other way I can get relevant challenge?
