Hi folks, thinking of writing a regular mini blog here about my learnings being a generalist in the ecosystem.
I currently handle growth at an ecom startup and have previously been through 2-3 startups + a large corporate in my 7 year career.

#1: Why you should not stay only in startups

Recently started reflecting on salaries of many peers who are also startup folks and trying to see where it stands.
There are 3 cohorts:
a. People who started out in Big 4/Corporate & then became a generalist: They've been underpaid the most. First pay was 4-5L, and when they transitioned to startups, started at 7-9L. Over time, growing from there is difficult without MBA.

b. People who have forever been in startups: They earn more than A on average. But here too, there is a delta in their salaries vs. people with same YoE who went to an MBA and are in corporate now. Side note: I've seen this cohort has usually loved what they've done, and being in startups definitely has positively impacted their thought process.

c. People who went to a corporate/big tech etc. mid way: This cohort has done the best long term. Their pay got recalibrated when they went to a larger company in the middle through their career, and when they rejoined startups, they were respected more in salary negotiation.

This is to anybody out there who is a generalist and sees a similar path. Try to sandwich a proper, large company in your career. It gives you perspective on whether you like it and if startups is really your preferred route. And it also recalibrates your pay.

Startups will limit you basis your last salary. Corporates have standards basis bands. Just something to think over.

The Generalist - #1: Why you should not stay only in startups

Not only compensation, corporates help you to learn saying “NO” to not-related tasks. I see young startup folks in the name of “learning” are forced to do anything and everything. In my first startup role, I was handling the responsibilities of a PM + ops, which burnt me like anything without any significant skills gain. Corporate taught me delegation, saying “No” to things which aren’t part of your team.

I’m an Eco major graduate from a top-tier DU college, currently working at a consulting firm with around 1.5 years of experience and a CTC of 9.5 lacs. I’m not enjoying the work at all, but I’m bound by the salary I’m making. There are no significant financial constraints.

I’m trying to find a job in other industries, but nothing fruitful has come up yet. I’m also passively studying for the CAT/GMAT. I really wish to take a leap of faith and quit my current job, but I’m scared to take this step because of the good salary I’m receiving (which is quite substantial for a fresher). I also feel there’s a calling for me to do something better with my life if I quit.

Do you have any suggestions?

How can one specifically target startups and succeed? While many pursue top MNCs or MAANG, getting entry can be challenging. I am keen on working with small startups. Hello I'm 22F a 4th year student from a tier 3 college. I got placed on campus in a very small scale startup for 6.5 lpa but the internship period was of 9 months at 15k per month in blr. Now they have announced that they won't be giving PPO to us. My internship is ending in March 2024 before that I need to get into a new job. But all the openings are low paying i.e. 3 or 4lpa jobs and I'm in doubt with my DSA skills. I need someone who can mentor me on this path. I've worked on mostly Java, Springboot, Automation testing and C++. 
How should I prepare along with my internship in this 2 months?

In need of Guidance

I guess a rant as well as seeking advice. I started my first company at the age of 22 right out of college. It was semi successful. Scaled it to a few crore in revenue but because of some issues had to close it down. Worked on a few products again which again did alright but not enough to giving me savings. This experience ranged from software to e-commerce. Building different products. I’m now 31, and started a biotech company about a year back. However stuff has been slow. I’ve barely any savings and funding in my space is scare. So it’s been small government grants. I’ve realised that if this doesn’t take off, after 10 years of struggle I probably need to look for a job atleast for a few years. (Won’t ever give up on starting up. I’m a fighter that way.)

My resume is eclectic. I’ve done all sorts of stuff with mediocre success. But don’t have a defined skillset. (Like being a programmer for example).  I guess one skillset I can say I have is identify and opportunity. Also I have tremendous stress tolerance and ability to work. 

What should I do? Should I eventually look for a job? If yes, honestly I don’t even know what job profile I’ll go for. Because I’ve never done a job ever. 

I’m confused. I’m not married and don’t plan to. For me me, running a company is everything and I’m willing to sacrifice everything else for it. (Includes not being married so that I don’t have pressure to maintain the lifestyle married life entails.)

Sorry for the long post.

Final Year Student | Intern Needed!

I recently worked at a startup and it was terrible. 

To be honest, I still worked at one of the better ones but it just sucked. 

Some of the clear downsides I see 

- Survival mode leads to chaos. You can be treated anyway and asked to leave whenever  even though you left big opportunities to be here 
- Brand loss to find next job (Big problem)
- Trying to make you feel unworthy(Doesn't bother me but I have seen people lose self confidence)
- Loss of opportunity to build real skills like building sustainable teams for the long run

I think over all working at a startup especially early teams is a losing proposition. Do it only if -
 - you know the founders/team well 
- you know the industry and market well and it is a bet you personally believe in
- you are secure enough in life that if you go back to your job, you will easily get employed 


For middle class kids, startups are the worst bets one can take.

Hello everyone. We, a group of three friends, worked on a startup idea for hyperlocal e commerce. I knew it would upset me if I read the whole thing but they did it anyway. Now, I’m depressed.  I have removed all 14 of my connections who liked and commented on this post. Any other workaround to cure my depression?

I recently got an offer from Dunzo so I resigned from my current company and was serving my notice period. 3 weeks after resigning , Dunzo called and rescinded the offer.

Kya g***** log hai mc, nahi hai gotay to hiring kyun karte ho, playing with people's lives. People should en masse avoid them until they raise funds.  
  
 Also for safety @Coulson595 - ask existing company if you can be retained. You'll be stuck for 6 months minimum and thoda ijaat jayega, but papi pet et al. If they don't agree, get on the immediate joiner gravy train asap.
