Salary Negotiation

I recently cleared the interviews for a very well seed funded startup. I want to know how should I negotiate? HR has asked me to tell the expectations, how to benchmark it?

Also, how much ESOPs should I ask for?

This is a very it depends question.

As sashi said, esops are paper money, take what you’re getting and forget about them

For cash component,
Research startups in the same space, whatever they offer, i would add 10-20% considering you’re switching. Also depends whatever role you’re joining for how many team members are already there, if the team is very small, you know the expectation is going to be higher from you from day 1 so i would adjust accordingly.

Lastly, emphasise on the value you will create for the company, what perspective you’ll be bringing and be confident.

Thanks. Startup is in fintech sector, and role is product operations? Any benchmark?

Not enough salary datapoints on product ops, so cant say

Also the relevance for the role changes from company to company. Check out glassdoor, ambitionbox for your company or similar companies and go from there.

I would suggest don't think much about esops, it is not guaranteed that it will convert to money when you're leaving, focus on cash component, because on cash component you will be getting hiked

Right amount of ESOPs

As a software engineer with 1.5yrs of experience, how much ESOPs shall I ask from a Seed funded startup. I am here since initial days of company.

Is it a certain percentage of valuation? What's the market standard?
