It is supremely obvious that SWEs are about to enter the golden era of Software Engineering. We are easily foreseeing 2x-2.5x improvement in developer productivity rate. You should go touch some grass or else you will end up becoming PM guru who shills substandard-courses to poor kids.

Lately I am seeing a lot more people talk about the fact that being a PM is a sub optimal strategy for an eventful career in Tech. However, let me remind you that people in tech tend to be predominantly engineers and they like the people skills needed to be good at making Products for actual humans.

I have personally witnessed PMs be great at talking to various teams in Engg, Design, Analystics and Operations. They are so good at talking that they forget that they actually need to work and not just speak all the time. I feel that PMs are all talk but now work and just chill around the foosball table all day. Once in a while they will go and flirt with that new chick that joined their team. In case the joke wasn't clear, "PMs are the cesspool of Tech". 😂

We need PMs more than you think...

1. They are the most overpaid people in India.
2. They have no work life balance and they don't even know what it means.
3. They think they are the best at everything, but they can't do anything right.
4. They are always complaining about their job and how much they hate it.
5. They are never satisfied with their salary or benefits package.
6. They are always looking for new jobs because they think they deserve better than what they currently have.

 1. Doesn't do anything other than throwing random jargons 
 2. Can't explain what they do other than say how they are not Program manager or something else

What does a PM even do everyday?

Let's face it. In some company (read mine) they are the gatekeepers of all things roadmap, obviousness, communication between engineers and business. While in some companies they are nothing but a left over thought acting no more than a typical Program Manager (Google and how Engineers have more say and power in roadmaps).

I mean they listen to some people's tasks, then bring that and tell some other people to execute those tasks and then collect those results and show it to the people who asked for it!

Answer is obvious mate. And it's already in motion. 
 Everyone knows current product management breed is a messed up fraudulent bunch. They will run into poverty if they don't change ways🙂

When I say a big company, I mean $50B+ market cap. I think PMing at a smaller scale is much more intense in terms of work load. You are constantly doing a lot of 0-1/1-10/10-100.

But what about 100++ companies/products? What does a PM at Gmail do? How do they fill up their day? I mean how many experiments can one perform? 

Is PMing at that scale majorly just project management? 

For PMs who moved from high growth startups to companies like PayPal, Google, Microsoft -- do you get bored?

What exactly do PMs at big legacy companies/products like Gmail,  do?

A friend is evaluating product role there. How is the overall work and culture there in the product team?

And I always thought that's what PMs do 🤭

1. High pressure on timelines- business and top management shits on you if you don’t deliver on time
2. No power to control the outcome- engineers don’t listen to you neither does the design or analytics team, you end up begging for resources
3. Too much politics- business or a senior PM can steal your bandwidth anytime
4. Lack of recognition- if it succeeds business did it, if it fails it is product teams fault (engg never gets blamed for shit)

I believe Product Management is a really toxic role

Indian. I am a SDE (backend) currently. ~2 yrs exp. 16 LPA and I work 40-50 hrs a week. I like where I am, but I am not feeling the zeal for tech anymore. Probably will do a MBA down the line (thinking abroad, not sure) 

Looking for equal or greater pay, similar WLB, new domain. Should I switch to PM and try a hand at it? 

Am I aware of the reality or living in my own isolated reality?

All the PMs I see have an MBA or are past engineers. I'm from an arts and design background, Tier 1 institute. Worked in tech for 5+years and learned how to build products. Based on feedback so far, I'm doing fine. 

But I worry about progressing in my product career without those external signals. Product feels like a boys club full of people from the same universities and backgrounds, with the same extreme quant-driven approach.

Is there room for diverse educational backgrounds in product management, realistically? Which companies have you see hiring these types of PMs?
Would love to hear from others in the same boat.
