What is the one thing you don't like about being PM?

Product managers are a divisive bunch. Ask us what we do, and most of us puff our chests and babble about Steve Jobs, PMF and god-knows-what. The rest slouch and mumble something about writing JIRAs. Curious about how non-PM folks view us - both good and bad!

Let's face it. In some company (read mine) they are the gatekeepers of all things roadmap, obviousness, communication between engineers and business. While in some companies they are nothing but a left over thought acting no more than a typical Program Manager (Google and how Engineers have more say and power in roadmaps). What are your thoughts on your PM?

So with advancement in technology since decade and then the COVID wave , many startups were having money flowing into them from VCs and there was a boost in Indian startup ecosystem, many startups achieved the status of unicorn too , i am not saying product managers were not existing before , ofcourse they were there buliding some amazing products for the users out there, but do you think that the extra cash that was coming into the system created so many product management roles as a generalist and gave rise to popularity of product management and now we can see every second person wants to be a PM

Can PMs here please describe their day to day work? What kind of things do you work on? What scale of products/users do you deal with? Likes and dislikes about being a PM?

Same as title. Wanted to understand the day to day duties of a Program Mgr in Amzn. Do they have any decision making powers, do they get involved in designing business/tech logic or it's simply a fancy courier service ?

Hey grapeviners, I am a software engineer and earning pretty good, but I have always dreamt of becoming a product manager. I don't hold any MBA. So How do I transition from a software engineer to a product manager.

With over 10+ years of experience in Product management within the insurance and Fintech sector, I’ve realized that product management is still not understood/defined well as a role. I’m open to all sort of queries.

I’ve been into startup product management for about more than 5 years. While the problems are interesting at times, the daily life is mentally draining. I can’t think of anything else apart from work even post working hours. Feels like there’s no life/identity apart from the work I do. I try taking time offs but it gets back to where it was in no time. I want to transition to PM roles that have better WLB. Not sure if any startup could offer that. Is a PM role at a big tech services firm less stressful - WITCH, maybe? If so, what could be the best route to get to one. At this point, I think I’m ok doing boring projects as long as I can take the work off my head after working hours and balance out a better personal life alongside.
