What was off the books before, is now made mandatory Nothing new here.   Started my career witha top OEM. The general shift starts at 8. And ends at 5. But everyday production meeting would be at 5.30 and go on till 7pm. 
My next job was with GE, people would get all sort of important task only after 5... And everyday we stayed atleast till 8. So most of us will login only by 11 and first 3-4 hrs we did nothing but chat.

Hi All, 
I think with funding winter, the work culture in Bangalore Startups is becoming toxic day by day. In my company, it started with filling the daily time sheet of what work we did, then why do we need work from home( Company gives 4wfh/month), then a circular came today that every data filled in timesheet will be minutely checked with card punches, can't be late even for 5 minutes more than 3 times a month. The hypocrisy part is employees are underpaid(5-6 LPA for software developer) and overworked(9+ hrs/day).
I got to know one more startup where they have normalised 12hrs/day 6 days a week working and if you work less, it will affect negatively. They force their employees to reside nearby to the office so they can work till 12-2am from 10.30am.

Is it common everywhere?

I've had the fortune of having worked in 3 countries so far. India is by far the most exciting place to be in 2024.
But there's something about our work ethic that just concerns me. In both white and blue collar.

In most other countries, I've observed people strictly sticking to the 9 to 5, working diligently in those hours - not wasting too much time on chai sutta breaks, instagram browsing, gupshup etc.

They work for 8 hours, then leave. And think about work directly the next day.

In India, most of us spend more hours - but very obviously very few of those hours are productive. In fact, I lately feel that too many people around me are doing even 2-3 hours of work on a good day.

We end up just staying around, passing time, and then go back home. When we could have achieved so much more.

Work ethic has fallen. Work hours have gone up.

We need to be more mindful of our actions, we need to work well at work, and then do well at home.

I think it's a function of being over populated. There are 1.5-2 people doing what 1 person should be doing, hence this effect.

Needs to be fixed, it's the sign of a major problem in the workforce. Thoughts?

Disguised unemployment in India - It's all around us :/

We don't end up staying long hours because we need to. But because we have to, so that the manager doesn't feel like we leave the office by "half day".  
  Also, they have a leverage that they can shut their laptops at 5 and nobody will reach out to them. But here in India, managers do reach out for escalations, or make us attend lat evening calls because it's afternoon in Europe or morning in NA. The people sitting in Europe or NA are not made to wake up early or attend night calls to accommodate us during our actual 9-5.  
  People also chit chat etc. bcz they know for sure that they have to sit for long hours..so they need to take small breaks in the day. No one has the capacity to work 10-11 hrs without any breaks.  
  Here it would never be possible to have such a strict 9-5.

Is 9-5 a myth in India?

Total disconnect... most of us do not work 40Hrs a week -every week.. sometimes its 60hrs some times its 20.. but the main requirement is we need to pretend to be busy. That's what's defines a hard worker in our country.

With all this talk about quiet quitting and burnout, it seems like the traditional 9-5 grind is losing its appeal. I've noticed more of my colleagues advocating for flexible schedules and remote work options. 

Has this shift in priorities played out in your workplace too? How has your company responded to demands for better work-life balance? Do you think this is the new normal, or just a temporary reaction to the pandemic?

Context: I work at a startup, it's a pretty chill work environment, very flexible, hybrid model. Everything is great.

Problem: They take flexible work hours too seriously, I have meetings at 10 PM on weekdays and almost every weekend there's some work which they need the next day in most cases but apparently have to keep the meeting on the weekend with no prior notice.

I mean, i like going to office twice a week around 11-12 and coming back around 7, wfh when I have a few meetings that day but is it normal to work on weekends? and after work hours?

P.S. I've only been in this company for a month and joined as a fresher.

Now that I've put it down, this is such a gen z problem lol

But what should I do?

I saw Oppenheimer recently, and there Oppenheimer had request the officials to have the families of the scientists come along (to a very secret, highly sensitive base for research of atomic bombs) because the scientists would need an environment that is conducive for their brain to work. 

Contrast that to my pretty regular law firm, why can’t my partners understand that the environment where a brain can function is not the environment of constant criticism? 

I have had my performance review and I have been scored well. I know that I am not stupid, I know that my work product, if not great, is decently good enough. But every time I have to talk to my partner/ PA on some work, I get a weird anxiety that what will I be yelled at for this time. 

I had been yelled at for reminding my partner of a deadline. After email the work product, sending a message on teams, I have been yelled at for not calling my partner up (wasn’t something pressing/ urgent deliverable). 

My seniors say that the trust me on my work. To me at least- Trust doesn’t mean I’ll give good work 100 times, trust means- one time if I don’t meet your expectations, you’ll trust to give me benefit of the doubt and not be schooled. 

It is a norm to long hours and it is a norm to work over the weekends. Then why am I made feel guilty if I wanna go home early (at 5/6 pm) one day? Why am I made feel guilty for asking for a leave?

Recently the CHRO of my company called me into a discussion on improving  WORK LIFE BALANCE.  Wow. I just cannot understand. Look at this. 
1. Most companies work 5 days a week. (Except retail operations). So you get 52 weeks x 2. 104 days. 
2. 30 days annual leav
3. 9 days statutory holidays. 
4. Operational holidays. 3. 
145 days of 365 days corporate people don’t come to office. And in a hybrid format even more. 
It is these corporate vultures who want work life Balance. How can u balance your life if u r unable to do it in 145 days. 
So Narayana murthy is right - work hard like 80% of india. Who have almost no weekly off. Just saying.
