When should I ask my director/partner for a LOR?

I’m on my notice right now and plan on going for an MBA sometime after a couple of years. Should I request my current employer to provide me a LOR right now, before I’ve moved on? Or should I just inform them right now and take it when I’m actually applying to B Schools? Also also, what should the format of the LOR be?

Haven't done it myself. But I would suggest to get a draft agreed right now till the memories are fresh (in terms of what you did and what you achieved in company).

If they are not used to writing LOR, they will struggle to provide it in right structure (hence need to provide draft).

And inform them, if you decide to pursue MBA and need LOR , you will share back the draft agreed so that they can fill it up (I think these days usually they have to write it in online portals)

Ask now. I had requested them to write one during last week before leaving. It's been 2 years, didn’t get them. Even reminded them once over messages.
