Topmate sessions !!
I see a lot of folks opening their calendar and offering resume review and career guidance and other things via Topmate. Some are charging like 6000 per hour. And posting that as if they are making some contribution to the community. They are keeping posts as that is their way of giving back to the community as if it's some sort of charity. How the hell is giving back to the community when you are charging 6000 per hour ?? I dont have a problem with people who keep it openly as its a way to earn some money. You are giving your time so asking money for it is not at all wrong in my book But please dont label it as charity for god sake 🙏🙏
These chindifluencers and their shit topmate sessions are not with a dime. The only thing they are doing for the community is exploiting them

- You live in an echo chamber. You yourself named it as "charity". Nobody says they are doing a charity. It's always "1:1 mentoring".

- Charging 6000 is a different topic. That's their value of time (which you are too naïve to understand). There are Ram Lal Colleges, IITs and then Harwards they charge their price accordingly.
- Whether the sessions are paid or unpaid, it will be counted as community give-back. They are acting as an agent bridging the gap bw industry and student. Just like a coaching institute(topmate) teacher.
If you were not aware, let me tell me you that it's because of people like you, the internet talks about the Indian Money Taboo.
one thing is clear that you didn't understand my post properly.
I never said that charging 6000 or 10000 is wrong.
As you said it's their value in their terms.
I said Calling it giving back to the community is wrong.
When you are doing something for money it's like a job and it's a side income for them which is totally fine.
And I myself do things for money and am never ashamed of that until I do something illegal.
I agree that some people in india consider earning more money as taboo.
Am not one of them.

Speaking as someone who has mentored numerous students and early career professionals for free, I can tell you that most free sessions ended up to be huge waste of my time.
Very few share the agenda beforehand to allow me to prepare, and if they do, they come unprepared expecting me to do the job for them. Ending each call feels like a relief and makes me feel guilty for having committed that time for no good.
A small fee filters out the spammers and free loaders and people become serious for what they pay for. Given the Indian mindset, a small payment is definitely a good thing.
I won’t be surprised if someone pays the worth of a beer or two they would anyway splurge on a weekend in return for some actual value and ask for my kidneys as a part of the mentoring offer! \s

Reiterating that I am not against people taking money for their time and more importantly the experience which they share.

I have now stopped giving free advice. I like to it, but my experience was quite discouraging.
Scams will always be there in markets. People have to become smart which one are?

How are people giving such amazing career advice while having just 3 years in industry and they’ve left industry to be an educator….
It just feels like we are going back to old days. I know it's their right to earn money for the advice they have but tech was all about free resources. Still you can find a lot of people don't give a hoot about money and give free advice just saying.
If it wasn't for the free advice that I received from Discord or Reddit after college, I wouldn't have got my current job.
This made me check someone who was promoting on their Twitter a few months ago. They are charging 500 for 30 mins.
They had like 1 yoe. What kind of secret sauce do you learn in just 1YoE that can help you in giving advice to others.
A few months ago a bunch of seniors in my company also started the same. They are all experienced but still don't feel good about having a paywall to access the good information.

The problem is if they give for free - the signal which is taken from free is that it is worthless. After all only worthless things are free.
What these people are giving is their attention for that 30-60 min. which is very valuable.
Up to us whether take it or ignore.
If u see my post am not at all against them asking money for these sessions.
Am saying that charging money and calling it charity is bullshit!!
