I'm not a pro player by any means, but I'm able to play if I read tabs/chords. And after some experience, I'm able to understand what pitch a song is in.
The biggest advice I can give you is this:
Make the learning process fun for you.
What I mean is, learn to play songs you like/love. The easiest ones are pop songs that you hear on the radio types.
They generally have a basic structure, and easy chords that teach you to move between chords in a rhythm.
I used (and still use) ultimate-guitar.com to find how to play songs.
From there, you can move on to complex stuff. (I'm no expert here)
