Anybody here lived/studied abroad but then came back to India? If yes, what made you come back?

Also, how was your overall experience of living abroad?

  1. Spent 3 years working in the US. Got bored out of my wits.

  2. Hypothesis to get back was Indian growth multiples will pay off in the medium/long term.

  3. So far playing out to plan. Not regretted coming back. Not career graph wise & not monetarily either.

  4. Life in India is so much better. Nothing replaces the experience of being near home.

Very interesting @TallTales69
If I can ask, what are you doing now after coming back? As in, how are you leveraging Indian growth multiples to its best?

Studied abroad and came back to India. Top reasons

  1. Close to family
  2. Better growth opportunities
  3. House help (was tired of cooking and cleaning)

#1 has always stopped me from going abroad, good to hear from someone who came back because of this

#3 was it really that big a pain? I’ve not experienced it really, but does it feel that much to people?

If you already doing chores like cooking, cleaning etc by yourself in India then it is fine. But in abroad you have to do all things by yourself. You will not realize untill you experience it. If you have kids then work will be doubled. Helpers will be there but it is too costly to keep them. Online delivery in abroad is NOT cheap and there will be very less options.

Worked in the US for 3 years before moving to Barcelona, Spain to pursue my MBA. The idea back then was to work a couple of years in Europe (sports) and then startup in India. I saw the problems in education financing back then, and decided to move back and start GyanDhan. Still at it. Did a brief internship stint in London during MBA

The decision to move back was 'relatively simple' as I had moved to the US with the idea that I will move back and start something in the future.

About the experience: Absolutely love the work culture in America. The diversity made for a nice experience, particularly soccer and hanging out. Spain was quite similar to India in some aspects, loved the food there, watching games at Camp Nou wasn't bad either. Walking was a big + when compared to the US and zillion times better than back home in India. Couldn't imagine myself working in France or Spain though. I have no idea about London as I was interning at an investment bank :)

In short, I have nothing to complain about my experience. Moving back was a conscious choice and I am comfortable living with the choices I made.

'halwai ki dukaan sabko achchi lagti hai' , 'door ke dhol suhaavne lagte hain'. Having said that, working on something you love (hopefully one's business / startup) is the best

For those of you who returned back to India, Why?

I’ve had some experience (2/3 of my life) staying abroad but didn’t make it into any full time long term roles and moved to India. But if given an opportunity I do want to go abroad, it’s just difficult. I see folks here that moved back ...
